Need Advice: Headphone Gift

Thread Starter
I am looking for a set of headphones for a gift for my teenage son. I know he wants something over the ear and i know he will want something that is loud, clear, and good bass. He is not an audiophile of course, so something that can go loud but maintain clarity would be good. I think good bass would be good too. He has beats but they are broken or worn out.

Budget is $100 - $300max. Any help appreciated.

What sources will he be plugging the headphones into?

My guess would be either a smartphone or an mp3 player. I would assume we're looking for on/over the ear headphones, correct?

It will be general use, so like phone or tablet. Its for general use. He wants over ear or whatever covering the ear is called.

My recommendation would have to be the Audio Technica M50x. I know I probably recommend these too often, but they are simply amazing. I believe they're around $170 or so on Amazon right now, but I should check again.
*edit: woo, guessed the price correctly. They're $170.*

Thanks. Are they durable? Any other suggestions to compare?

for incredible and powerful bass, while keeping a well controlled overall sound, you need to look for the JVC HA-SZ1000. They are just like a headphone with subwoofer (they have two drivers, one of them for the sole purpose of bass. check it here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/661129/jvc-ha-sz2000-1000-appreciation-thread last post of 2nd page has a pic).

they truly amaze me, the bass power is outstanding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qktZ3fqEJrk

they are stylish, well inside your budget, and seem quite durable

If he likes heavy bass, Ultrasone HFI-580s are great bassy DJ headphones for under $200. You can read some discussion of them here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/534029/fight-the-beats-hype-ultrasone-hfi-580-hfi-580-appreciation-thread

My 14 1/2 year old son has had a pair for about two years, and he hasn't managed to hurt them yet. (lol)

Ath pro500mk2 sure do have bass. $100. Solid build quality. Downside is that the earpads aren't that comfy

X2. Magnificent sound for the price... Best of all they don't need an amp to sound great. smily_headphones1.gif

I'm a fan the of V-Moda M100. They're over ear, very durable, deep bass and customizable if bought for $310.00 no tax+free shipping straight from V-Moda OR on Amazon for $299.95.

Heres the V-Moda website link: http://v-moda.com/crossfade-m-100/

and the Amazon Link: http://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-Crossfade-Over-Ear-Noise-Isolating-Headphone/dp/B00A39PPI0/ref=sr_1_3?

The Sennheiser Momentums are another good choice. You can get them from Sennheisers warehouse outlet in both on ear and over ear here (I prefer the over ear)

the M100 are just over his budget, and there are similar/better sounding options for less. but yeah, they are built to last. as for the Momentum's I don't think they are as suitable for bass-heavy EDM as the others.

another pairs I remembered are the Ultrasone HFI-780 and the Audio Technica ATH-Pro700MK2 (more expensive versions of the above mentioned), CAL!2, Denon AH-D1100, the tank-like-built Munitio PRO40 and the M-Audio Q40

He says $100-$300 MAX, so the M100 from Amazon is right within his budget at $299.95. I was assuming bass heavy rock and rap as the genres his son listens to since he didn't specify music type but did say he owns a pair of Beats that're broken.. The M Audio Q40 is a great choice though. I had completely forgotten about them.

The M50 would be a great can too. There's a modded pair in our classifieds for $92 bucks from cCasper TFG. He's a good guy to deal with and his mods might as well be professional. These ones have a detachable cable cable and HM5 pads installed. Here's the link, if you're interested

yeah, I was considering the price w/o discount. either way I'm sure 10 bucks won't make a difference

I've read a post from someone saying that buying used in here is one of the best places to chose from: the buyers are into music, the cans probably were well taken care off, etc. definitely a option to have in mind
