Having a friendly discussion with a friend about 2 amps, need a bit of help!

Me and a friend of mine (also a Head-fier) are in a friendly discussion. I ordered the ALO RXmkII for 350 euro's and got an extra silver case thrown in for free (from a verified reseller).

He says I should've gotten the FiiO E12 because it's just as good/better for a lower price.

I'll be using it to power my MrSpeaker Mad Dogs 3.2 and Hifiman HE-300. Source is my android smartphone (xperia z1) and an acer laptop.

Could anyone with both of the amps, please give a comparison?

Thanks in advance!

The only person that can know that for sure is you! Your ears, your brain may click with one amp over the other.

But most people don't have the luxury of comparing amps side-by-side so you have to rely on specs and reviews. Lets take a look at some quick specs I scrounged up and see what they say.

RX MKII

FiiO E12 Mont Blanc

So the frequency response is negligible.

Output impedance is important. You want your headphones to have, generally, about 8x more impedance than the Output Impedance of the amp. What is the impedance of the headphone you're driving?

Lower THD - Total Harmonic Distortion - is better.

A higher Signal to Noise ratio is good.

Those 3 specs are fairly obtainable, and will help you judge an amp's performance.

  • Output Impedance of amp to your headphones
  • THD
  • S/R Ratio

I've done all the digging I'm going to do on this one : )  What are you seeing? Which one is the better performer?

Looks like the RXmkII is slightly better (also counting in the battery life). But is that small bit worth the 230 euros?

My headphones are the MrSpeakers Mad Dog 3.2's BTW, 50 Ohm.

That is the question we all ask ourselves, and only you can answer   ; )

Some pay thousands for that last 1%. Some think that's insanity.
