Setting up an external DAC while using ASUS soundcard

Thread Starter

Hi Head-fi members!

I am trying to figure out the best way to put together my Headphone/2.1 desktop system. Or, more to the point, how do I integrate powered speakers, bifrost DAC, and Lyr 2 amp while using my ASUS essence sound card and Jriver media center.

This is the way I have it connected at the moment:

1) Jriver (WASAPI) --> ASUS essence STX --> (via RCA) Emotiva Control Freak --> Powered Speakers

2) Jriver (WASAPI) --> ASUS essence STX --> (via SPDIF) Schiit Bifrost --> Schiit Lyr 2 --> HE 500

Ideally I would like the ASUS sound card DAC to feed the powered speakers and at the same time provide an unaltered digital signal via SPDIF to the Bifrost DAC.

Am I missing anything with the above set-up?

The software set-up has me a bit confused as well... How do I set up Windows 7 and Jriver for the above set-up?

I assume using the ASUS WASAPI audio device in Jriver will be fine for the analog outs of the sound card to my speakers but what about SPDIF to the external DAC?

The playback devices in Windows 7 are:

1) ASUS Essence Speakers (Default)

2) SPDIF Pass-through

The recording device in Windows 7 is:

1) Wave (Playback through this device: SPDIF pass-through)

ASUS Audio Center is set to SPDIF Out: PCM

Thanks in advance for your help!

Seems like your setup correctly.
