According to headfier spyro the w40 is a handy upgrade on the 4r so soundwise at least you should be happy.

The W40's are on the way. I had no idea the W40's were any upgrade on the 4r's,but like you said according to spryo. I'm looking forward to experiencing them soon. Below is the last message from Westone:

Hello,

We have completed testing on your W4R,left side & cable only.. It has been determined that the issue you were experiencing was a result of right side of cable intermittent. Unfortunately, this is not a repair that we are able to complete; however, we do have a one-time out of warranty replacement offer available. This is an opportunity for you to purchase a brand new, W40 at a discounted price. The replacement unit will come with a one year warranty from invoice date. Please see the replacement quote below:

W40 $ 250.00
Shipping: $ 11.95

TOTAL: $ 261.95

If you want something new, you can flip it and use the money to fund for a new IEM.

Else you can't really go wrong on these.

I received the W40's this past Monday and barley had a chance to listen to them. I've read that the W40's where basically identical in performance as the 4R's except for the obvious cosmetic changes. I've used a Fiio mont blanc to power all my headphones and IEM's.

In my experience the W40's sound superior in almost every way to the 4R's. I don't know if this has something to do with the interchangeable ear tips and getting a better seal with the W40's but with my old 4R's I had a great seal using Shure ear tips on the 4R's and didn't have the same listening experience as with W40's. Something else that was surprising;the W40's didn't require the use of the 16db boost with the Fiio amplifier like it did with the 4R's. Using the boost with the W40's led to distortion.

I really wanted to hate the W40's because most reviews and forum conversations I've read about the W40's focused around how disappointing it was to see that Westone opted to make cosmetic enhancements and no performance enhancements vs the 4R's.

The only bad thing I will say about the W40's is that the overall look and feel of the W40's in my opinion do feel and look cheaper than the older 4R's.
