No one needs headphones. Some people just really like audio / gear, etc. It's a hobby.

I have an open pair I only use at home, a closed set for when the room noise / TV /Wife is too loud.

I have a few portable sets for on the go. Also one for working on the car or in places that I don't care if they get beat up or not. Lastly a dirt cheap pair for testing new tubes with...

ok there we go! at least your setup makes sence. but what about those people that have like 4 pairs of closed headphones? i dont get why they would need that many.

Just like the guys who collect watches, I have a buddy who collects knives and his brother collected guns...

Some people just like to collect things.

Because we're all kooks. No matter what item you can think of, you can find kooks that take it waaaaay past any sort of reasonable point. It's like Rule 34 only G-Rated - if you can think of it, there are people who collect it.

I don't know really. When I joined the site and looked around I assumed I would be one of those guys at some point who had a ton of different headphones. It never panned out that way though, always had one for home use and one for portable. smile.gif

For me it's about getting the most out of the love for the music I listen to. Quality in the broadest sense and improving on the current are closely connected but those two things go beyond 'just' headphones. Also, when you listen to different genres one headphone will be (much) more suitable than the other. At least that's my experience. I'm aiming for four or five max including a gaming and a portable pair.

i dont know about that but i love my hd558 headphones and they soud great with prittymuch anything.

How many other high-quality headphones have you heard? If they are the best you have heard, then they will naturally sound great - until you hear something better. That's why head-fi meets are both very fun, and very frustrating. You go to the meet very happy with your current headphones, and you leave thinking you NEED a Sennheiser HD800, Fostex TH900, Audeze LCD-3 and a Stax SR-009... wink.gif
