Suggestions for a New DAP to Replace Zune 120

Hey Head-fi,

My beloved, 8 year old Zune 120 is wobbling on it's last legs and I don't think it's long for this world.  It's been a great companion for my portable music all these years but I think the time to look elsewhere is coming.

I'm looking for a new DAP to replace it, and would greatly prefer not to get an iPod, since I am not an Apple fan.  My music collection is mostly either MP3 320 or FLAC, so large storage size would be nice, and playlist support is a must since I would be often using it in my car through the stereo's aux in.  I could use my LG G2 which sounds very good, but I would prefer to have a dedicated player since the G2 has limited space and I would like to preserve it's battery for long trips.  Headphone-wise I'd primarily be using it with Cosmic Ears HY3, Vsonic GR06, and very rarely with my Mad Dogs.  I do have a Fiio E17 for high impedance cans so that's not that big of an issue, tho the ability to drive inefficient headphones without a separate amp would be pretty cool.  Money is not toooo much of an issue, but spending more than $300-400 would be hard to swallow.

So give me your suggestions Head-Fi!  I know virtually nothing about the current slate of DAPs so any advice or tips would be awesome!

Well, the current slate of DAPs means that the ipod classic is the most straight-forward replacement for a zune120. There's literally nothing else of a similar ilk left.

The first option that came to mind is something like the AK100,with two microSD card slots, but that's way over your ideal budget isn't it? The Sony ZX1 is also over-budget.

There are a number of cheaper players you can conceivably stick a 128GB microSD into, they claim to be audiophile (i.e. above the ipods and your zune), and each make different concessions in size or usability compared to your zune. This is what I mean when I say there's nothing of a similar ilk left.

If you're happy with the G2's sound, I would suggest a late-model android phone that's got a microSD slot...possibly used so that it'll come under budget? Or if you can accept 64GB, then we get the ipod touch and Sony F887 as additional options; they are meant for "the rest of us" and I think they'll be much more in your wheelhouse. You don't want apple so that leaves the F887 which you'll have to source from Japan.

Thanks for your reply, I'll have to check it out.  Also, if the pickings under that price point are really slim, I'd be willing to look at more expensive DAPS, just means I have to save up for a bit longer

That's great. I know I may have sounded a little bit dismissive, but if you're willing to pay, in 2014 it's really become easier to put 128GB or more in microSD cards into a smartphone, or a player like the AK series. If you needed such storage a couple years ago I wouldn't have been able to name anything but the ipod classic. So, happy shopping/saving up!
