Uhh...why is my 14 gauge thicker than my 12 gauge wire?

14 Gauge wire is some no name crap, (CCA) I got on ebay. At least 1.5x thicker than my 12 gauge I just got from Monoprice.

My Monster 12 gauge is also thicker than the Monoprice 12 gauge.

Does it have something to do with car speaker wire vs home speaker wire? The Monster is designed for car subwoofer's and I think the 14 gauge was meant for car's as well.

Well (CCA) is Copper Coated Aluminum and it needs to be larger to have as low a resistance as 14AWG copper.

We are seeing more and more of this stuff. But I suspect that most brands don't oversize it to the copper equivalent.

Often sold in big-box stores with the RCA brand, but even Parts Express is selling it under another brand.

Monoprice may be cutting corners - intentionally or not. Best way is to measure the total diameter of the strands - just do a search and you should turn up the right size for 14 and 12 AWG wire.

Are you measuring the outer diameter of the whole wire (including insulation, shield, etc.) or are you measuring the diameter of the conductor only?

per @yage, make sure you measure the diameter of the copper conductor of monoprice to verify that it meets the 12 gauge AWG spec.

Cheers

EDIT: AWG sizes
