Open headphone as an upgrade to the DT990

Hi everyone,

since the cable of my DT 990 Pro recently broke, I thought it'd be time for an upgrade.

I listen to many music genres (pop, indie, hip-hop, metal, soundtracks) and for my liking the Beyers sounded fine for that, but I'm itching to try something new.

Now I'm wondering if there's an open headphone (up to 300€) that would be a definite upgrade to them.

Preferably the cable should be detachable, impedance doesn't matter much (amp/dac is on the way).

Thanks!

Hifiman HE-400.

Agreed - the new HiFiMANs coming out will likely mean you can find a HE-400 at a bargain price.

Or an HE-500 which would likely have similar reductions in price.

The HE-400 are going for 300€ currently and the HE-500 for 600€, which even after a price reduction would be too much for me.

What worries me the little is the weight, as I often wear my headphones continuously for many hours.

Would something like the K712 Pro sound completely boring compared to the HE-400?

I have no weight issue with the he-400 and with the alpha pads it is all good.

I think its already starting to show as I have seen a couple of 400's go for under £180 on eBay last week might snap a pair up myself if I see them at that price again :P

You're unlikely to have both to compare - I'm thinking that if you go for either you'll be happy, but the AKG may not be far enough away from the DT990 in terms of an 'upgraded' sound.

Take note of what you like to hear in the music - do you like mid-frequency energy, or a boosted bass and rolled off treble with a dip in the mid range (EQ wise)?

The HE-400 has the latter response - great bass impact and a gentle treble with a recessed mid. I love them, but also have some old AKG Sextetts and DFs if I want some mid-range action.

The HE-400 certainly gets used for more air-guitar :L3000:

What do you use to drive headphones?

I will be using the Sabre DAC 2 (UAE23+).

The DT990 is the first "real" headphone that I own. I know it's V-shaped, but I don't know if that's what I'd prefer most because I haven't heard anything else in the "upper class" section of headphones and mainly bought them in the past for their soundstage and price. I guess I might end up having to order a few to compare them to.

If you like the bass emphasis and extension of the DT990s, I'd definitely recommend the HE-400s smily_headphones1.gif

Thanks for your recommendations, I ordered the HE-400 now. Ideally I'll like them so much that I don't need to try other ones.

Hope the soon to be released HE-400i don't trump them. :D

Even if they do, the HE-400i will likely be much more expensive. The HE-400s used to be 1/3 more in price.

Just received my amp/dac and the He-400.

Unfortunately if I use anything other than the headphone output of my PC, only the left channel works.

I guess the headphone jack is not well made?...

Anyway, I'll have to return them as they're useless if I can't use them with my desired sources.

Did you make sure both connectors are secured to the cups? The 400s are known for connector issues because of their proprietary design.

Yes, they're secured. Even on the PC where both channels work, as soon as I bend the cable/jack for 1mm, only one channel works.
