Need a bit of help with a setup...

Thread Starter

So I am planning on getting a set of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros. I have done some research and have concluded that the 80ohm models will be most suited to what I listen to (Rap/Electronic/Rock). My question arises when I come to how I will be driving these bad boys. I currently have a Xonar DG (very...meh) which does its job and nothing more. Should I invest in an external DAC/Amp (Fiio E10, E09K, or similar), or maybe invest in a sold sound card (Sound Blaster Z, maybe an Essence if I work more overtime) to not only power the headphones, but also give me extra functionality with gaming and virtual surround etc. and keeps wires, connections, and loose equipment to a minimum. OR am I way off here and nothing on the level of the equipment I am posting needed. I want to get the most out of these headphones, how do I do it? Lets keep this as a best bang-for-my-buck search. Rather save money for potential upgrades in the future. Thanks guys.

The Creative Labs Sound Blaster Z sound card is a good value, I tried one for a month.

If you could budget for a used Essence STX (off eBay), sound quality should be a touch better.

Personally I would get the DT770 Pro 250-Ohm, over the DT770 Pro 80-Ohm.
