Looking for a new set of headphones for my commute. I have been using Sennheiser M-450x phones that I bought for travel, but I want something with better build quality. I've also found the noise cancelling to be AWESOME on planes, but not as much use to me on the train where what I want to block out is mostly other people talking.
I have a pair of AT A900s which I have also used, but they are too big and crazy to commute with, and I don't trust that they'll survive my bag. I'd like something a little punchier too. I've also had various clip ons and IEMs (Westone 3, the wood AT clip ons, KSC 75, etc), but I want over ear.
I had narrowed it down to the Sennheiser Momentums and the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros. On vacation last week I had a chance to audition the Momentums. The first track I put on was Lorde and my eyes bulged out of my head. Awesome. Then I threw on Queen of Hearts by ******** Up and the smile disappeared from my face. Great bass, absolutely horrible mids. Someone in one of the threads here mentioned that fast layered tracks get muddy with the Momentums and I couldn't agree more.
Honestly, I want the Custom One Pros. I like the looks, its a brand I haven't tried yet, pretty good reviews, etc. However people say the sound is V shaped like the momentums and I guess I am nervous that the Beyers will be super muddy on mid-heavy tracks. I don't think I can find a place to audition them here. I looked at the Brainwavs HM5s too after seeing a lot of reviews on here. I don't love the looks but most seem to think they sound very good.
Are there any other phones I should be considering? Budget is under $300. Music style is kind of all over the place. Mostly it's been electropop and hardcore lately...I realize that those are two pretty divergent genres.
