HD650, Corda Arietta, what USB DAC would you recommend?

Well my old faithful Auzentech Prelude has died on me, so I decided it was time to give having a dedicated DAC a go. I currently have a Meier Corda Arietta, and a HD650 which I have had for around 5 years, and am very happy with. I have been considering upgrading the HD650 to a HD700 or even perhaps a HD800 if I decide that it's worth the price. Naturally this means the AMP would have to be upgraded as well. This means I am hopefully looking for a DAC that can support a HD700 perhaps even a 800 depending on the price. The DAC should have a USB connection but does not have to be USB powered. Optical/SPDIF is also an option

I have been looking /asking around and have been given som DAC names/recommendations, but I value the opinion of "Head-Fiers" the highest because I have always ended up making purchases I am happy with after asking around here. When I was given these DAC recommendations, but I did not mention that I would perhaps be getting a HD700 or HD800.

Recommendations to far:

ODAC + 02

RL friends mentioned a "Schiit Stack" I assume he means a modi or loki?

Somone also mentioned JDSLabs something but I can't for the love of remember the model type.

Sorry I know there is not much to go on, I would say my budget is somewhere around 250€ - 300€. I also suck at making decision on minor things like this and just like to gather tons of info first. >.>

DAC wise, JDS only carries the odac. They do have a C5D that's a dac/amp tho.
Schiit Stack is probably the Modi(dac) & Magni(amp). Loki is just to add DSD playback to a dac.
There's some good budget dacs but if you stretch maybe a little, maybe the Bifrost? I think it's just around the edge of your budget but that's only going against the conversion rate. Tax, fees and what not isn't factored.

I was looking at that one as well, but the problem is that it shoots up by 100$ when I select USB input (I want to use it from my computer with only an onboard soundcard so USB would be preferable I assume?) bringing it to 450$, which isen't too bad, but I am afraid that another 24% in taxes, and shipping might bring it much higher :(

Off-topic: Love the avatar! I might just steal it for future use somewhere :p

Thanks. I "borrowed" from someone on deviant. biggrin.gif

You might want to look into Audio GD stuff too. Their dac/amps perform higher than what they cost. Something like the NFB15 or 11 will power the HD650 and 700 easily. Shipped should cost you around 250€. They only issue with Audio GD might be a big one tho, tons of ppl have driver issues when trying to get 32bit playback.

I will rather go with some more pricey then unstable, I guess I can google to see what kind of issues are common. I don't want to risk getting a faulty unit or having driver issues in Win8. Does seem to good to be true for the price :p

Edit: I forgot to mention that SPDIF/Optical is also an option.

True, if that's the case, maybe the Modi until you can splurge on a bifrost. biggrin.gif
I'm using a NFB12.1 at home and a Aune T1 at work, doing just dac work. For around $100-150, it works really well. Plus, you can swap tubes, which is another money pit. wink.gif

The bifrost might be an alternative now if it has spdif/optical without usb its 350$. The amp i already have will suffice for a while i guess

I have the Bifrost Uber with 2nd gen USB, It is a superb dac.

Perhaps I should go for the Bifrost then, now the question is if i should save up some more and get the USB version. I assume it doesn't matter if you have a crappy onboard soundcard when i connect the computer to the dac using SPDIF/Optical?
