I currently own Beyer Dynamics DT 990's 250OHM. I am using a Asus Xonar Essence STX as a amp currently. I am looking for something bertter and looking to invest 1,500-2,000$ in a Headphone and amp setup. I would be ok to purchase quality headphones and save more for a amp later if need be. I listen to alot of hip hop, house, and instrumentals. I am a bass junky but dont want to sacrifice some mids and highs. I am looking for something that I can invest in and enjoy for years to come. I most likely will keep my 990's for PC gaming and use my fiio e17 e09k combo to run them. I have read so many threads and continuously get side tracked and confused. I hear Burson Conductor for amping and Fostex TH900's or Denon AH-D7000's if you can find one. I know they are pretty rare now. I would appreciate any recommendations. Im still a newb but willing to learn.

I swapped out my Essence STX for an Audio-GD NFB-15.32 external DAC/Amp, $270+shipping
The newest revision is called the NFB-15
The NFB-15 can replace both your Essence STX and E17/E09K

Or spend a few extra dollars for the NFB-11, $355+shipping

These DAC/Amps should be able to drive any headphone you buy.

Right now my best headphone is the Audio Technica ATH-W1000X, which is about $500 new and under $400 used.

The W1000X is a good can for bass and medium representation and could suit the music you listen to, coming from a DT 990 you may like the piercing highs.
IMO the treble is hot and fatiguing, may be you can mod the AT with pads changing to avoid sibilance (there is a HF thread)

600$ for headphones is not that bad for great quality. Was thinking i was going to be investing at least 1,000$
