Need help choosing between getting an AMP or DAC and a pair of headphones

Thread Starter

Hey, I've been talking to Tyler from Mayflower Electronics and he said that I should just get the Objective2 Rear Power amp and AD700X's.  I trust what he says and have actually wanted AD700x's for a while but I don't really understand if an AMP would make my stuff sound better or a DAC.

Help would be great, oh and also I was thinking about getting Fostex T50rp's and just modding it and making them a bit like the Mayweather V3's.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I play pc games for around 4 hours a day but only listen to a little bit of music BUT I still want good audio quality, not some "gaming headset".

Asus Xonar DX/D1 sound card (used, $60) comes with a nice CS4398 DAC chip :)

Used with a O2 headphone amplifier, would bring out the best in the AD700X headphones.

The Xonar/O2 combo would also be able to work with just about any headphones you might buy in the future.

Technically my $27 FiiO E6 head amp could drive the AD700X headphones, but the O2 makes a nice investment for the future.

I've had correspondence with him, too, and now I don't listen to what he says. LOL

Schiit Magni, which Mayflower doesn't sell, is a comparable amp and will run you a little less. Put the difference toward your headphone budget. The Xonar D1/DX that PurpleAngel recommended would be a good soundcard to pair with a headphone amp.

Why don't you check out this thread about headphones for gaming: http://www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-update-4-17-2014-akg-k612-and-k712-pro-added-edits

All the highly rated headphones for gaming listed there will sound very good for music, too, although some may fit your listening tastes better than others (e.g., some may have more bass emphasis). Maybe you'll find something you like better than the AD700X? smily_headphones1.gif
