Anyone using separate amp with Fiio X5?

Hey everyone, I recently purchased the Sennheiser HD 600 and the Fiio X5 to listen to FLAC files. I'm really enjoying the X5, but I have to turn the volume on the X5 almost all the way up to get the depth and volume of the music to adequate levels. I understand the HD 600s are somewhat power hungry, or maybe my 57 year old ears are the major problem. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation, and if so, are you using a separate amp with this setup?

I have done some searches on this, but am not coming up with anyone discussing what they may doing. I am really happy with the Fiio, so I was looking at whether adding the Fiio E12 Monte Blanc to this setup might help driving the HD 600s, and if the E12 would be a good matchup to the X5.

I apologize ahead of time if this is an ignorant question, but I've just recently discovered High Resolution music, and after doing a good bit of research, mainly on these forums,I made these my first purchases. Have really enjoyed perusing these forums, and would appreciate anyone chiming in with their opinion.

Oh, I am running the X5 on low gain after reading many posts where people were saying you potentially add distortion running at high gain. Any thoughts on that also? Thanks in advance for any help.

Run it on high gain, that option is there specifically for headphones like the HD600. The difference in distortion is tiny and doesn't matter.

Yup - upping the gain is good advice. It has worked well on my pairing. I have run an E12 and a JDS C5 - each of those has produced a nice result.

I've got some insensetive 600 ohm headphones to sing with the X5 - high gain should cover you and the HD600s. That's with the original firmware however - volume levels can differ slightly from version to version of the internal software.

Thanks guys. I'll give the high gain a try over the weekend with various types of music, but it sounds like all of you have tried it out and have gotten good results, so that makes me feel better.

Wow...this is really a good forum full of helpful and knowledgeable people.  Thank you all for taking the time to respond.
