What Headphones Should I Buy?

Thread Starter

I've finally decided that it's time to upgrade to a higher quality pair of headphones. I can spend up to $200. I listen to all types of music, but mainly some classic rock. I like the sound to be balanced, but with a slight emphasis on the bass. After doing some research, I've decided that I want an over-ear, closed pair. Would the ATH-M50 be a good buy, or are they just really overrated? Any other recommendations?

You have a few options.  There are closed cans like the ATH-M50X, open ones like the Grados...each does things a bit different.

I'll give you my standard recommendation and link you to Innerfidelity.  Tyll does great reviews and provides a lot of good information to help you make a decision, from sound impressions to measurements.  Start on wall of fame, and maybe dig further if you don't find what you are looking for.
