Converting WAV or FLAC to 320MP3

Thread Starter

when i convert a track from WAV or FLAC into 320mp3, i notice more a bit more clipping when i compare them side by side in audacity. both happen to be one of those modern CDs with loud tracks. when converted into WAV from CD its all blue. but when converted from flac or wav to 320mp3 a few strands of red lines appear indicating clipping. why is that?

Well, mp3 is lossy (even at 320kbps smily_headphones1.gif). So the result will never be exactly the same as the original. As you noticed also the peaks may be even higher and clip some more.

The good news is that ths extra clipping by mp3 encoding/decoding can be avoided by using replaygain in a player like foobar2000.
