USB Turntables: Any good? Work with wireless speakers?

Thread Starter

My wife has a vinyl collection and I am thinking about assembling a "simple" but nice setup for her.

I have come across USB turntables from say Pro-Ject and Audio Technica. I am thinking about connecting one to say a wireless set of speakers like the Dynaudio Xeo3/4 or the Dali Kubik Xtra. (I actually don't know if either speaker can directly connect to such speakers???)

Thoughts?

I would probably lean towards the Dali speakers since they are cheaper and can be mounted flush against a wall. I am looking for a setup that is compact and can sit on a bookshelf along with her vinyl collection.

I doubt the USB outputs on those would work with the Xeo transmitter - these are more like an iPod on its sync protocol (ie these are for ripping the vinyl tracks) than using an iPod with a DAC. Besides, you'd be doing an ADC-wireless transmission-DAC conversion which is a complex chain. If you're buying the USB TT why not just rip the files, then put the digital files in her iDevice?

Or if you have an existing TT right now, instead of a USB TT, you can pick up a USB phono preamp from NAD, rip the vinyls, then put the music in any iDevice she uses. If she's on Android, ask Dynaudio if the Xeo transmitter works without drivers and if it actually needs any power from the USB, then check if her Android device is compatible with USB OTG. It it's a YES-NO-YES on those points, the Android should work.
