Upgrading my bottom of the barrel turntable setup

Hello,

I've been lurking here for awhile and have a pretty cheap turntable setup.

I have an Audio Technica LP-60 with the orange stylus (I purchased it some time ago) going into a Fiio E6 that powers my Etymotic ER6is.

I've been thinking about upgrading the whole setup (or at the very least the amp/turntable) for around $500. I actually like the sound I'm getting so far, but would like to reduce the sound of the belt drive (I can hear the rotations on quiet songs) and would love a warmer (maybe more mid-rangey) sound.

Thanks for any help!

Are you OK with manual turntable, or do you want automatic or semi-automatic?

How much damage would occur if I fail to pick up the stylus before the record ends? I tend to stay near the turntable and like to use it as a way to experience music without distraction, but occasionally I might forget or fall asleep.

From none to a lot.  There will also be wear on the stylus (and to a lesser extent on the turntable) for whatever period of time it remains on the moving record.

Ah I tend to react pretty quickly so I'm sure I'd catch it once I heard the click or grind. I think manual should be fine.

Also for what it's worth I will likely pick up hf2s the next time they drop under $100 since the triple flange tips have a pretty solid fit for me and I do really like the mushroom plugs despite the discomfort and Etys were the first nice headphones I've ever owned.

Thanks!

I have no personal experience with these, but at or near your price range Stereophile magazine recommends the Music Hall USB-1 & Rega RP1 turntables and the Audio-Technica AT95E & Ortophan 2M Red cartridges.

Great! I have a pretty small apartment, can you recommend a good headphone amp to drive the headphones? I'd like to avoid having to get a receiver if possible since space is limited.

Sorry--I only use IEM's directly out of portable devices and usually only when on the go.  I'm mostly a speakers and headphone guy otherwise.
