Should I upgrade to the Alpha Dogs or go with something else for the money?

Hello, everyone! I currently own the Mad Dogs and love them. Super comfortable, sound great, etc. However, I also am going to come into some money and I feel the need to buy something new. I could either send my Mad Dogs in to upgrade them to Alphas, or just buy something new to go along with my Mad Dogs.

I was looking into the HE400's and, from what I've heard from people, they're incredibly nice. I don't have a place where I could try any of these out that I know of (I live in Austin, if you know any good shops in the area feel free to tell me), so I can't be entirely sure of what I'll like more.

Do the Alpha Dogs completely outclass the HE-400's, or is there a chance I might prefer the Hifiman's? What kinds of sonic differences are there between the two?

Thanks in advance!

Why don't you tell us what "sonic" preferences do you have or what is it you think the Mad Dogs are currently lacking that will make your enjoyment of another pair better or more complete? How long have you had your Mad Dogs?

Thanks.

The Alpha Dog is wonderful but if they MD is all the you've got, it would be nice to add something complementary like the he400. I'd vote for the he400.

I'd say that currently the only thing I really think it lacks is sound stage and spacing. It isn't bad by any means, but that's just something I hugely value. That and a warm headphone with some bass to it that doesn't sound too boomy. I've had my Mad Dogs since around Christmas time.

I'd say go for the HE 400, it might even be an upgrade of sorts to the Mad Dog that you have, it's got a very open sound and the bass is NEVER boomy on the Hifiman Headphones [well 400+] and it's got great bass response! In addition the HE 400 has a warmish sound to it

Which part of Austin do you live in? I should be available this weekend if you want to try out my pair so you can get an idea of how the he-400 sounds.

Oh my gosh, that would be incredible. I live over in Round Rock, so I don't know how close that is to you. You can also try it my Mad Dogs if you want. Thanks!

Sweet! Just tell me where you want to meet up and we'll make it happen. I can't do it on Saturday, but any time on Sunday is fine if that's alright with you. I don't have any good amplifier besides my sound card and e11, so I don't know if that's something you have either.

I'll bring my X3 and E12 so you can get a good idea about how it can sound. Sunday should be good for me
