Problem soldering new mini jack to Shure IEMs

Thread Starter
My venerable Shures need a new jack fitted due to an unreliable connection within. The screen is fine but the signal cables are tiny and contain copper 'hairs' along with thread and are impossible to unsheath without severing the copper. I tried burning the sheath and thread away but this (unlike the same approach to stripping cat5 cable) has just left charred gunk.
Any tips welcome!

Heat up a bead of solder and run your wire through it. It will melt the enamel and tin your wires at the same time.
