General headphone moding question...

I was just curious, most headphones cover the front (ear side) of the driver with plastic or metal with a few holes punched. This always struck me as providing a severe reflective surface that would cause resonance and standing waves. Has anyone tried using something like hexagonal metal mesh or something similar?

I may have seen a design like that somewhere, but more than anything, those funky-shaped baffles are for tuning the sound. It can't be helped, I suppose.

For example, the Sony SA5000 used a very minimal hexagonal wire grid shaped cover. Probably the best I've seen for commercial dynamic headphones.
