Looking for help with PS4, astro mixamp, additional amp, and headphone setup

Hey everyone. I currently am using an Astro Mixamp on my PS4. I use to game on PC and I use my Audio Technica AD700s with the Mixamp. I'm about to order the Y-splitter so my mic will work as well.

I am considering purchasing some new headphones, as I've had these over a year and they don't feel as comfortable on console as they do on PC for some reason.

I've pretty much made up my mind on Sennheiser HD 598s.

The only thing I'm looking into now is an additional amp to drive the headphones better and not make them feel like they're straining for power. My AD700s feel this way compared to running off my Titanium HD card I had in my desktop.

What amp would be good to use with the mixamp and is there a particular setup I have to go with? Basically I see the Senns use a 1/4 inch plug. Maybe I could use this without stepping down by using an additional amp?

Any recommendations are welcome in any regard. I'm also looking for a mic. Probably going to get a Zalman clip on. Are these good? Don't want a lot of background noise.

I hate the A40s. So uncomfortable and cheap feeling. Pre-skull candy buyout they were great, but I had to buy new ones and they suck.

Weird that the AD700/Astro does not sound as loud when used with a gaming console.

Might want to turn up the volume settings on the PS4.

Also make sure the PS4's audio is set to Dolby Digital live (DDL), the PS4 might also just list that setting as "Dolby".

A Schiit Magni headphone amplifier ($99) would be able to provide more "juice" for driving the ATH-AD700s.

But you really should not need it (normally) for the AD700s.

I'm just comparing it to what I had in my PC, which was obviously way better than an Astro mixamp =(

It's fine as is, but my only want for more juice, is so that the sound might be clearer, and not sound like the Astro is giving it all it can.

Also with the HD 598s, will the 1/4 inch plug make a huge difference from the 3.5mm plug?

I don't have anything with a 1/4 inch plug so I can't really test it out myself.

There will be no noticeable audio quality difference between an 1/4" plug and a 3.5mm plug.

The 3.5mm has more then enough contact surface and the 1/4" is used in "Professional" environments because it is more rugged.

Ok thank you for your replies!

I'm going to start another thread and try to decide if I want to get another set of headphones, or if I want to get a home theatre and go straight up real deal surround sound.

I'd love to hear the difference.
