Whats up HEAD-FI!!!!!!!
I don't post much but I figured I could contribute to the community with a second review now that I have two high end headphones and I compare them directly.
My ogrinal review of the HE-500 is linked below.
So to start off price $699.99 for the HE-500s and $849.96.
Holy sch1T!!!!!!!!!!!!! that hurts typeing those numbers. Price is porblay the most important thing to consider when people shop for anything, and when it comes to that both headphones come with price tags that will hurt your very soul. With that said my situation has changed from my last review, I still am a college student and I have to come up with ~$5000 twice a year to continue finishing my degree at the university of south carolina, however I now have a much better job. I currently am employed at AT&T and last year I made ~$32,000 up from the ~$15,000 I made when I bought the HE-500s so money is less of a problem then it used to be. The only reason I metion this is so you guys can take what I say about price into prespective. IMHO a huge chunk of the audiophiles who do reviews lose track of just how much money the average person has. They often will say things like brand x $250 amplifier is cheap or entery level or a bargin etc.... So with that said the headphones in question are super ultra mega ridiculously painfully expenseive in an offensive to poor people kind of way.
Are they worth the money? Espically when you cosinder where I am in life and how much money I have to spend? The short answer is, yes.
So the next logical question for any one that is considering buying one of theese two heaphones is which one is better?
Comfort, T1 wins hands down. Not only is is significantly more comfortable because its so much lighter you can head bang with out the fear of the headphones flying off. \m/!!!
Tonality, the HE-500s overall have an edge here I believe, they do bass better the beyerdynamics. If you are a bass head or you like kick drum slam the HE-500s are the ones to get. The mids and highs are different but neither one is clearly better then the other. It will most certianly come down to which kind of music you like the most. For example I will say that grandpa guitars or vocals the T1s have a magic to them that will put a smile on your face. However electric guitars have more attack and sharpness on the HE-500s to my ears. For rock music or metal I would say that the HE-500 are voiced better, for acoustic style music I think the T1s have an edge.
Sound stage, The T1 wins by a land slide. If this matters to you buy the T1s, I can compare theese headphones to HD-650s, HE-500s and grado SR-325is. The T1s make stuff sound correcly sized and spaced its as close to listening to speakers as I have heard. The sound stage is so good that not only can you hear where instraments are in relation to one another, but also on some recordings that have this information perserved you can actually tell the size and shape of the room the music was recorded in. This information does not come through at all on the HE-500s.
Speed/detail, the HE-500s win. Not much to say here they are faster. The beyerdynamics are faster then say my old HD-650s I don't want to give the impression that they are slow, you won't lose out on detial retrival on the T1s but the HE-500 are faster and more detailed.
Value, Not really sure while the HE-500s are cheaper they are far less comfortable and and have a horriblely desgined cable, it has broken serval times.
So which one is better?!?!?
The only answer I can give is it depends, The biggest difference you will hear between the two headphones are the sound stage and the bass. With that said I can say that neither one is perfect, If they ever made a headphone that has the bass and resolution/speed of the HE-500s and the sound stage of the T1s that would be the perfect headphone. Alas I can only dream...
