EDIT: ack, meant to post this in comp audio forum, feel free to delete!
First post and relatively new to the hi-fi hobby, so please excuse my ignorance. So far, I've only dabbled in headphones and amps, but I'm looking for a nice sounding 2.0 set of monitors or speakers.
After a lot of research, I've narrowed my search down to the Swan m200mkii or Mackie mr5mkIII (Budget is 300 or less).
I have a few questions:
1. Should I even look at monitors purely for entertainment? I'm not a DJ and I don't play an instrument. They would simply be used for listening to music.
2. I simply want to plug and play from my laptop or ipod - Looking at the Mackies, that doesn't seem possible. Again, excuse the ignorance, but do I need a receiver or something to control the volume to hook these up? Unlike the A5s, which are out of my budget at this point, it doesn't look like there is a volume control on the monitors themselves. What kind of cables would I need? Split RCA with a 3.5mm? The Mackies only have XLR, TRS, and RCA inputs.
3. Should I just save my money and get something like the swan m10 or save up and go for the A5? Based on the above, are there other options that would meet my needs? I definitely want good bass response, but I live in a townhouse and have neighbors, so a 2.1 is probably out of the question.
Any help appreciated! Thanks.
