Schiit Modi DAC- Optical or USB

Thread Starter

Hi,

So I am about to purchase a Schiit Modi DAC and a Schiit Vali tube amp. For the DAC, I could it in either the optical (SPDIF) or usb verisions. Strictly in terms of audio quality, will I notice a difference?

Also, do you recomend the Schiit Vali or Magni amp? Thanks for the help.

PersonallY I like the idea of S/PDIF optical, as it can work with sound cards and i like headphone surround sound for movies and games.

USB is more plug & play, but bypass the sound card, which does not matter for music.

Only commenting on Vali vs. Magni: Depends on your headphones, since your profile has no information in it as to which headphones you are going to drive with them: IEMs and low impedance headphones: Magni - high impedance headphones (70 Ohm and higher): Vali IF you like the tube sound. The Magni can drive nearly any headphone just fine.

More versatile: Magni

hi , i have both and ran them from my macbook pro optical and usb using iTunes only . i liked the sound through the optical better but i didn't see that much difference in the two . ill try to post more latter as I've only listened to them for few hours switching tracks .A/B testing and just playing around . I've had the modi usb for about a month and the optical a few days, output is through an integrated stereo amp and speakers or akg 701s from the amp.
