Hi all, I'm new to Head-Fi and was looking for some direction on a headphone setup. I've spent my audiophile money and time in the past on my home stereo/speaker setup. But lately I have (unfortunately) been doing most of my music listening at work, on headphones off of my laptop.
I have been using Sony MDR-V6's for probably the last 10 or so years. I like their balance, comfort and lack of fatigue. But, would like more detail, sound stage and 'kick' for lack of a better word. I listen mostly to rock (punk, classic, 90's, etc)/indie/folk music, or really just about anything that includes a guitar. I'll stray a little bit into classical and jazz occasionally, but not a priority. I like bass to sound accurate, extended, fast and punchy. I've spent a lot of time around live music and know what a kick drum should sound like. Really dislike boomy and muddy, including in the mid-bass region. I like mids and highs to be balanced and detailed, neither forward, fatiguing or muted.
I'm setting an initial budget of around $500 give or take. Due to my working environment, closed-back, over-the-ear style is pretty much mandatory for both isolation and lack of disturbing others. Not of fan of in-ears, they tend to make my ears ache after an hour or so (I sometimes go 3-4 hours without taking my headphones off.)
I am open to any and all options in my price range - with amp/dac, or without, etc. Like I said, the source is mostly a laptop that cannot be modified (company machine). Portability is not necessary.
Thanks so much for your time!
