If you wanted something more in between, the Soundmagic HP200 has good reviews:

Impedance is 32 ohm for the HP200, so easy to drive in that regard, although sensitivity is a little low. Might need an amp to reach the volume that you want and to give you better dynamics. But should sound good on most portable devices without one.

OH HEY Yea the HP 200! I really like the HP100, try the HP200, and yea the DT 990 is rather bright, which is why it pairs nice with the vali. And I hear you on the tube rolling,

Hey guys,

Thanks for the heads up on those soundmagic hp200s. those cans look great. 200 on amazon.

Like the dt990s they just look really comfortable and some of the reviewers have said they tested with music I listen to so that is good.

But the price of the soundmagics have me hesitant.

The HP200s have been $250 until just the last couple of weeks or so. $200 is a good price for them.

Still $200 is gettig into DT 880 Prices, granted it needs an amp but well something like the Fiio E11 would work, still the HP200 doesn't need an amp

Was just roaming through some of the reviews and forums for the hp200s. Some people are mentioning (one guy posted a freq response curve) that they really fall off at the upper mid range and that the soundstage isnt that great.

Im guessing they will respond equally as well to the vali amp as the dt990s.

Im going to keep digging to see what I find out on them. I'm seeing a lot of great stuff about the hp100s tho. Should i change my mind about getting an open back then i might have to consider the hp100s but for now ill stick to the opens.

Off to get more info..

Thanks a lot guys for the great feedback.

dt990s are winning this race so far...

Well, there is an open headphone that is fairly easy to drive and fits right in your budget: Sennheiser HD558.
