Sennheiser 598s vs 650s -- the eternal quandary

Hi Head-fi,

Long-time lurker, first time poster, with an unfortunately common query…

I’m a big Sennheiser fan and have used HD-555s for almost a decade. My pair has just begun to disintegrate, however, and repair costs suggest I should buy some new cans.

I like the open, airy sound of the 555s and used to run them directly into an NAD amp or the headphone output of a work desktop/home laptop. I used to take them everywhere with me, pretty much.

Currently, I’m looking at the 598s or the 650s. I understand the 650s are better, but, given the $200 price difference, don’t want to invest in something that I’m not going to really enjoy as much. I am planning on purchasing an amp eventually and am considering a second pair for travel/work, but obviously it’s going to be a gradual series of purchases.

Which would you recommend?

I would "guess" your work desktop/home laptop would not provide enough juice to drive the 300-Ohm HD650 to their best (The NAD should be good enough for driving 300-Ohm headphones).

I would say to just get an HD558, same driver as the HD598.

The HD558 can be improved (sound more like the HD598s) by removing the black rubber tape from inside the cups of the HD558,

As removing the black rubber tape might void the warranty, might as well buy used HD558s.
