Ah, although they are accepting orders, I think that you are right. I promised myself that I would hear the M first anyway.

Now back to the regularly scheduled thread about DAPs that I will not be buying anytime soon.  :-)

I just compared the new AK120 II, AK240 and the original AK120 at THE Show in So Cal today. Frankly I was not overwheled by the difference between any of them over the older AK120. Sure, they're both better, but the original is still excellent. To my ears, the native DSD on the '240 was not so hugely different than the same track on the '120II, where it's not played natively.  Also the new players are huge in comparison, and I really like the size of my AK120.

To be honest I was listening through an unfamiliar pair of phones, the AKR03 (s/a JHAudio Roxanne), which are hugely different from my usual UE Reference Monitors. So the signature of the phones was a much bigger difference than between any of the players.

Granted THE Show is very noisy compared to our own Head-Fi Meet Ups, so it was harder to focus on the sound of the equipment, even with good isolation.

None of them sounded 'way better' or even better IMO than the Chord Hugo, which is my main source these days, so I didn't take advantage of the show special, $1500 out the door for the AK120 II. Not that I wasn't tempted. I just thought that I'd rather spend my limited budget on things that will add something unique to my collection. I ordered the Universal Roxanne's instead from JH Audio.

At the rate that A&K are coming out with players, I'll probably get the next version at the August So Cal Meet Up. For me it's pointless to upgrade to every new version.

I picked up the AK120II today at T.H.E. Show (I bought the AK120 last year at the same show). I got it mainly for the improved UI. The touch interface on the 120 is not the easiest for me to use, especially when using the side of the screen for scrolling. I imagine any sound quality differences will be minimal.

The original AK120 use 2x WM8740, while AK120II use 2x CS4398, i would not say that they are of different league (and in fact they are rated at similar spec), but the house sound is obviously different for Wolfson and Cirrus Logic, they suit different people taste (I am big fan of Wolfson BTW).

Its not wise to invest in the original AK120 now
There is a low chance that AK will continue to invest after the coming firmware upgrade, let alone the resell valur

Hearing is different to each of us. For me the difference in sound quality between
the AK120 and AK240 is HUGE. Not even in the league. I think if you do a poll of folks who took some time and in different surroundings than a loud show, you'll find most of us heard the same. I cannot comment on the other player you mention having never heard it.

why is that? on spec, AK120 and AK240 appear the same except AK240's dedicated DSD chip.

They're using same DAC chips and same interface.

He's talking about the older gen. They use different DAC and amp.
