Brand Spanking New A&K AK120II and AK100II - Page 165

Well that was a mistake...unit hard hung at 7%, and wouldn't respond to cancel.  I ended up pressing the home key and it took near a minute to respond to that before return to home.  It was immediately very laggy and now I have a Black screen with only the  notification bar showing...not impressed am I.

note: I had no break in the wifi connection (I was using it on my Mac at the same time as doing the update).  My uptime with my ISP is 21 hours according to my modem.  I can confirm that, since I actually work as a tech for my ISP and have direct level 15 admin access to our core Redback router:

[Internet]bnecore3#sh subs username senna@dslaus.com
TYPE    CIRCUIT                    SUBSCRIBER         CONTEXT   START TIME
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ppp     L2TP LNS 13086             senna@dslaus.com   Internet  Dec  3 00:21:17
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My guess is that AK's server fracked up...

Trying to download it now, but it's stuck at 7% - been stuck for 5 minutes now...about to go and move the unit closer to my wireless modem/router and see if that kickstarts it...did anyone else have this problem?

The AK Japanese website had made mention of the update a few days ago. Maybe there are others who got ahead of you and are hogging onto the server now.

Possible, but that's pretty bad on their part if they have ****ty bandwidth.  A big company like that can afford big Internet pipes.  I'm gonna be pissed if I have to return this for warranty repair cos of their crappy setup.  I'll be even more pissed if they play the idiot game of trying to blame me.  I'll take it to court if I have to.

do it via system ==> update...but at your own risk.  After what I suspect is a bricked unit, I wouldn't be doing it if I was you.

I'll be demanding compensation too from AK if it is bricked.

edit: pressing the home button takes me back to home.  But - if I now press setting, it just takes me to the Black blank screen with ONLY the notification bar showing...the user guide mentions no trouble shooting for firmware upgrade problems such as this.  So, do I turn the device off?  The User Guide says not to disconnect the wifi connection whilst its updating, but I can't leave it like this forever!  Battery charge is around 70%, which is >= than the 50% that the User Guide indicates for any potential firmware upgrade process.  I can still play music, but the system is now laggy when trying to navigate (took a few seconds to respond to the play request).

There's no FAQs on AK's website either - for any of the new products, 4 months after their release (I've already criticised this some time ago in this thread).  I have already taken a screenshot to show that AK's organisation skills and customer service are indeed sub par.

2nd edit: decided to shut it down.  Displaying the White A for around 8 seconds before shutting off, which isn't normal.  Starting back up did work and take me into the system, although the rotating A during startup was laggy.  Once into the UI, it presented me with the prompt that a firmware update was currently available.  I can play music and go into Settings properly now.  There's around 430mb free on the player's drive, the update is only 133mb so I presume that that's OK.  The User Guide and AK's website offer no help.  You can't blame an end user for such poor support.  Wireless has automatically reconnected, and I can see the unit's MAC address connected to my modem/router's WiFi setup.  System information shows that it still has the original 1.01 firmware update installed and there's actually 578MB free on the unit's drive.

I would rather prefer that AK let end users download the update to their computer and manually copy it onto a SD card and boot off that card and select the upgrade firmware.  Much *safer*.

2nd edit: trying a 2nd firmware update attempt, getting further and it hasn't hung (so far), but it is very slow.  I have a 5mb connection (Australia has really crappy Internet) and at the moment, I'm not using my Internet connection for anything else data wise, and I'm using around .1mb bandwidth down (around 2% of my total available bandwidth).  That tells me that AK's server and bandwith is TERRIBLE.  For those that are a bit slow to catch on, I'll repeat it - TERRIBLE.

I'm an old fashioned consumer so I'll say when a manufacturer is bad and won't hold back.  I guess the modern youth just seem to go with the flow and dare not criticise manufacturers as it's not "cool" or they're worried about being perceived as a troublemaker...I say screw that!

Man, you`re having a world of trouble that I am not.  Sorry to hear it.

I updated.  The update is only 133MB; it downloaded in one minute.  I then saw a confirmation screen, selected OK, the 120ii rebooted.   That took another minute.

Zero problems.

I don`t see any visual changes.  I`m listening, and of course . . .

I HEAR A WHOLE WORLD OF DIFFERENCE ! ! ! !

Just kidding.  I think.  I don`t know.  Placebo is amazing.

Let`s not all get carried away, like with the DX50/90 threads.

Does anyone have any commentary from AK on this update?  Is it just stability/maintenance package or is there any new functionality ?

I updated my 240 yesterday, went rather quickly a d fortunately smooth.

Dpastern, sorry for your troubles bro... Try and take a deep breath and relax.

I have heard the nightmare stories of dealing with AK, I totally understand your trepidation and angst. If for whatever reason you have an issue, deal with the company you purchased it from... That's what I did and no problems for me. Anyway, you aren't going to brick your device if it doesn't finish downloading. First it has to download the entire file, then it will verify it's md5 (which is like a digital signature making sure it grabbed the correct file and in its entirety), then it will flash. That's the only time you may brick your device, in which case most of those errors are probably user error, updating with a low battery. Regardless, other than the lag, you should be fine.

Trust me, I'm on your side and with you as a fellow consumer that paid a hefty price tag for their high end audio device. Just don't let it get the best of you bro!!

Too lazy to translate for you but you can use Google Translate. Shouldn't deviate too far. :)

Important thing is to ensure that you have at least 1GB of empty space before performing the update.

Question about the new firmware as someone who doesn't own the AK100, but is considering purchasing one. When it says that it added streaming from a NAS, does that mean that it can connect directly to the NAS itself to stream music or do you still need to have the MQS server running on a computer and then point that to your NAS to access the music there?

2: Qobuz app added (France only)   => And Belgium    :-)

6: additional MQS NAS support function   =>  Does not work AT ALL. It does not find ANY source. Not the AK MQS Application and not the DLNA NAS

MQS does not work at all. My phone (Sumsung Galaxy S5) finds all my DLNA servers in 1 second. AK .... Nothing

My Phone shows: AK MQS source on a Windows Server, CoolMedia NAS, Foobar2000 on my PC

Does anybody have success with the streaming?

Kind regards,

CasperBxl

Hi mate,

The intention is that you'll be able to connect to any FULL DLNA / UPNP server.

So that can be your NAS direct or through the AK Application MQS (that is also a standard DLNA player)

PS: I own a AK 100 II ... and the streaming function might be a bit buggy for the moment. That will be resolved i expect.

Kind regards,

CasperBxl

Thanks for the quick reply. That's exactly what I wanted to hear since I have a Synology NAS that would be storing my music.
