Brand Spanking New A&K AK120II and AK100II - Page 159

Okay I obviously need to research the AK capabilities more.  I just found this package for sale at a shop hear in Tokyo.  So this is possible?  Just the two units streaming ?

I know it's a lot of money, trust me.  It seems that minidisc.com.au no longer carries the AK range - they had the AK 120 II listed when I bought it, and it seems that I got the last one, as they removed it from their website afterwards.   They no longer list any of the new AK units at all.  The guy I was speaking to indicated that the AK gear was very reliable, but that iRiver weren't a nice company to deal with.  That leaves addictedtoaudio.com.au.  I haven't dealt with them, so I don't know how good they are.

What sort of PC are you saving for?

I'm so jealous dpastern!

I absolutely love the design on the AK100II 7 the AK120II! perfection at it's finest!

As awesome sounding that they are i wished they were priced at a more affordable price but that would be too good to be true. even if they released a cheaper player at a more affordable price, of course they would have to cut some corners but if they stuck with the same UI I would be over the moon!

That's a shame about Addictedtoaudio.com.au but that makes you a very lucky person! I wouldn't imagine a huge amount of people would be buying the AK range from addictedtoaudio either, I would think it would of been a small niche of people with a thick wallet.

I would honestly be more than happy if I could even get the discontinued AK100's but even that's quite a bit out of my range. :/ :(

As awesome as true audiofiles are, I can't believe that some people would be willing to invest SO MUCH MONEY into a Astell&Kern player although they seem to be the only players that are aesthetically pleasing to my eyes than the iPod Touch even tho they are miles apart in performance..

I can't really talk heaps into detail about the Pc I'm wanting to get as I honestly don't know much about PC's. Which is why my brother is helping me out as he has built PC's in the past and has a good knowledge about it as he went to Tafe to do IT and his now doing IT at uni. However I'm looking at a $1500 budget that can be capable of playing PC games very well as well as normal tasks like browsing the web. I may cut the budget down a tad as I'm not too sure how much gaming I'm going to do. This is my first step into PC territory.

I didn't that think that was possible.  AFAIK, you need MQS to stream with the AK units.  And MQS must install on an operating system (not just a formatted file system).

Yes, unfortunately, anything to do with audiophile gear usually costs a lot of money.

AK units are vastly overpriced, huge markup.  There's no sane reason for AK to have them priced so high, other than greed.

You can easily get a self built PC for that sort of money.

Only problem is nobody else in the market is capable to making something like what AK did.

Which is a big shame! if a company could produce a product of this caliber for the fraction of the price it would be a huge hit!

Oh, plenty of others are capable of doing what AK did.  It's a niche market though, and the large manufacturers can't and won't justify the R&D costs.  Your typical person is quite happy with mp3 and cannot discern any difference in SQ imho.  Nor do they care for high res formats.  Most people are gravitating towards Spotify (cheaper, easier and SQ suits them just fine) too.

It doesn't help that nearly every modern mainstream recording is CRAP.

CDs are dying from a sales point of view, as is digital singles/albums (albeit at a much slower rate).  Streaming is where it's at.

it doesn't help that software and hardware patents allow monopolies to form...get rid of those and you'll have some real competition and price wars.

Yes. Many have tried but none could deliver the complete package like what AK did:

  • Aesthetic
  • Portability
  • Convenience
  • User Interface
  • Sound Quality

It's either a compromise in one area or another.

That's why despite the huge price tag, AK240 still continues to sell like hotcakes.

Lots of companies are technilogically capable.  They lack the will.  The risk that AK took is not putting so much effort in design and build quality,  the risk they took is pricing the units so high.  I guess the risk is paying off, at least based on the way they sell here in Japan.  They kind of created their own market segment.  It seems like others are starting to try to enter, Calyx, Plenue . . .

Well said.

Those who possess the technological capability (e.g. Apple) lack the will to enter. (I am not sure if Sony is an exception as despite their attempts to enter into this market segment, their products are not up to par)

Those who possess the will to enter (I shall not name any example here) lack the technological capability.

I was one of the many to complain about the pricing of AK, but since owning them I am quite happy. I bought a zx1,which I loved, but IMHO it's not even remotely close to the ak100ii. I'd take the AK all day over it. I absolutely love all 3 of the top of aks line, and yes they maybe overpriced, but I really do love then. I'm extremely happy with my 240, and would have been just as happy with the 100ii if I wasn't a headcase.

I love A&K players and my 240 too.Easily I can say A&K is the best in DAP market IMO.I'm not fan. But,I love them.Yes they are more expensive than others but, they respect all procedures.

I mean;UI,sound,memory,imagination,effort.

Yeah I havehad other daps but there was always a compromise.
My favorite dap apart from my ak100ii was my dx90.
Form factor and bang for buck it wasn't touchable. Even the ui was good enough for me. In fact had I not tried the ak100ii I would still be blissfully ignorant and happy with it.

Since we`re all loved-up with our AKs, here are some more candid photos of mine.  Today I bought a balanced mmcx cable . . .

Nice :-D

I also bought a balanced cable from an excellent member of this community, for my CustomArt Harmony 8 Pro ciems.

The hard part : I must wait until January 5th to use them with the Ak100II ^_^;

What's the reference of your cable ?

Sony is quite capable, if they want to.
