I use a 2a but haven't timed it, but charging from computer sucks.

Hahaha, that`s awesome.  No, my friend, the grass is always greener and a part of me covets your 240...

Plus, rest assured that the BlueNote blue version is way uglier than yours.

(Actually, like many reviewers mentioned, the 240 only looks weird in photos; in person it`s quite cool)

Hands down the best player I ever heard.

I tried to compare it with my MacMini running Audirvana+ through my Meridian Explorer. Again the AK120ii is so much more clear, realistic and enjoyable...

Isn`t it crazy?  I`m playing the 120ii lineout to my big Denon amp/Fostex speakers, and it`s walking on my TEAC desktop dac.  Oh well, another thing I can sell.

I did too, covet the 240, which is why I bought it. I knew I'd always have that "itch"...But I have to be honest, I really do love the 120ii... Fit and form was/is perfect for my Lifestyle. The 240 looks nice, it's unique, but it's siblings are physically more appealing. Sound, same. Storage and" pimp status" go to the 240... Yes, I am that shallow!!!

Hey noticed you have a pair of HD800. How are the Senn's out of the 120II?

I think the AK240 looks very sexy too, but in a different way to the AK100 II/AK120 II (I like both designs)

Yes it can.  It requires 5V 2A.  An iPod2 charger (which is what I use), is 5v 2.1A and is perfect.  I haven't really purposely timed it, but I'd estimate that it takes around 3 hours to fully charge with this setup.  Some of the no name iPod/iPhone chargers are only 5V 1A, so be aware.  They'll work, but they'll take twice as long.

Not really much faster, it depends on the ratio of A to A (current) between each of the charging devices.  The USB page from the wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB

show max current for USB2 as being 0.5-0.9A (general) and 5A (charging).  I've NEVER seen a typical USB port [on a computer] output more than around 1A.

That's the main thing - that you're enjoying it.  I'm not familiar with the Meridian Explorer at all, so not sure what to expect.  The AK120 II is very nice, but you require really GOOD headphones to make the most of it.  Lower end headphones will not resolve the extra detail.  I'm tempted to buy a 2nd pair of Audeze LCD2s for public transport use.  I can't justify the Oppo as it's just as expensive as the Audeze unit in Australia, and isn't as good imho.  I wonder if a Sennheiser HD600 will suffice though - I think it'll be as good as the Audeze units for detail/transparency, but will probably lose out on bass slam.  Give that I'm a firm believer that the AK120 II lacks bass, the more bass that the headphones will deal, the better imho.

I have tried my HD650 with the 120ii but to be honest I'm a bit disappointed.
Not sure if this is possible but the sound is much more involving using the Shure SE846 rather than the HD650, although the Shure are IEMs... Is this possible?

IMO,A&K players are not designed for headphones. They are for iems.I do not recommend them with headphones.Cause you can't get quailty without an amp.

I am quite happy with the bass of the 120ii when coupled with the Shure SE846. Also, I am planning to try the "warmer" interchangeable nozzle of the SE846, this could add even more depth to the bass.

If that is the case, then they [AK units] have little worth to me as a portable.  I dislike IEMs and have zero intention of ever using them.  What you are suggesting is that the amp isn't as good as it should be.  I would agree with you that the amp is the weak point in the unit, at least from my listening.

The Audeze's sound better in the lower end, but even then, they're still lacking in bass imho.

I only tested the HD650, and I would agree with your point of view.

Edit: I tried again the Momentum with the AK120ii, in fact the player has no problem to drive them but the final result is in my opinion not as convincing as with the SE846 IEMs.

I'm running an AK100 II and I use it with:

     - Sennheiser Momentum (over-ear)

     - AKG K551

     - B&O H3 (ear buds)

The AK pushes these great.

     - MrSpeakers Alpha Prime

For the Alpha Prime you do miss a bit of the extreme bass the Prime can produce.

But, that said, the AK100 II in Unbalanced connection (3.5mm) does put out about the same as the AK120 II and AK240 (-1Vrms).

To really push the Alpha Prime I combine with the CEntrance HiFi M8:

MrSpeakers Alpha Prime: http://www.head-fi.org/products/mrspeakers-alpha-prime/reviews/11939

CEntrance HiFi M8 LX + AK100 II: http://www.head-fi.org/products/centrance-hifi-m8/reviews/11994

Sys Concept super small optical cable: http://www.head-fi.org/products/sys-concept-inc-toslink-mini-90-deg-precision-premium-cable/reviews/11912

Centrance M8 + AK 100 II and Sys Concept Ultra Short Optical cable

HD700 sounds great straight fr AK240.
It depends, harder to drive phones won't sound as good compared easy to drive ones.
There should be no problem with portables though since they are easy to drive.

My AK100II can still drive the MDR-Z7 decently at volume level 65/75, still OK with the LCD-X but totally crap with HD800
post #2310 of 6525

I mean hard headphones like HD800,LCD,HD6xx series or etc.Not standart headphones like Momentum.I don't know HD700 but I tried HD800 with my RWAK240 at Sennheiser store and I did not get some quality.I mean I got nothing with it.Because they are not designed for them. They are for iems.
