Brand Spanking New A&K AK120II and AK100II - Page 152

I just bought the AK120 II to partner with my new Shure SE846.
I tested a few different options before buying: AK100 II, iBasso DX90, iBasso DX50, Fiio X5, Fiio X1.
Best value for money definitely the DX50, but the AK 120 II had really something special, and I decided that I had worked hard and long enough to deserve one!

Apart from the fantastic detail and dynamics, the 120II (or better the 120II and the SE846) impressed me for their capacity to produce an impressively wide soundstage, and a very good balance between being laid back enough but still very involving.

Please tell me that what I wrote makes sense, because it took me 3 days of internet search to translate my feelings into "proper" words... tongue.gif

By the way, the AK120II came in a bundle with the ALO Audio SXC 24 balanced cable. Still testing it, but compared to the original SE846 cable the difference is not huge. Probably the ALO sounds a little brighter...

what did you feel made the 120II stand apart from the 100II

no 16bits 44.1 khz are the two domains that are used to sample a real analog sound wave.  If a 32khz sound wave is produced from a pluck of the string for example up to 16 bits can be sampled per second (forgot the actual number but it's like 2^16 times i think).  So once a sound is recorded you can't upscale the digital representation (16bits) to get a better representation of the original sound wave (some algorythyms get close but they are expensive).  Or something like that.  Its early someone can correct me latter

Good question. My answer is not linked to a specific sound characteristic, but overall the sound of the 120 was more airy and open, which is normally linked to a better treble performance. How and if this can be explained with the 120 having double DAC I honestly don't know...
I confess the two players (120 and 100) sounded very similar though, while the difference in SQ between them and the rest of the group was bigger.

In my case I went for the 120 because I could afford the price difference and I liked the bundle with the Alo cable. But for sure, from a value for money point of view, the 100 is a better deal.

Another perspective, which I've stated many times but in case you've missed it, I couldn't discern between the two at all after multiple abing.

Good to know since I am getting the 100II. Were you able to listen to these extended at home or at a shop?

John I had extended time with both at home. No difference to my ears, and to make you feel when better, no difference between the 120ii and the 240, therefore no difference between the 100ii and 240. Granted, I pro able have the worst ears on Head-Fi... So if there is a difference, I doubt it's significant.

AK100 II arrived...wow...out of box nothing impressed me like this, I will never be able to go back to X3 now.

Crystal clear, without been too much bright. PFE-232, TF10 shines more than UE-900, right now enjoying Marcus Miller on TF10.

waiting for my IE-800, but TF10 is also good with this. I am using TF10 for more than fours year now and never thought they could sound this much detailed.

I am not able find Gain setting, please suggest.

No gain setting is available.

For those who have the AK100II, please try it with EQ turned on and set as 'Flat'.

You will be surprised at what you hear :)

Ohh, no gain. I was hoping to drive HE-400 to use with my home gym. Does not matter I can use TF10 as well.

Thx
