Brand Spanking New A&K AK120II and AK100II - Page 10

Last year, 1000usd could get you a flagship DAP. Now, it can only get you an entry level AK DAP....I think Cowon would have to price over 1k so that people would take them seriously for their re-entry of audiophile DAP

It will be really funny if these tiny over thousand buck toys will have the same .cue problems as ak100 and 120 do have lol

edit: why does the headphone out on the ak120II have a 2Ω impedance? why not just go for the <1?? 2Ω does had a impact on the sound of high sensitivity IEM's like the UM Miracle right?

Yes.  Does it matter is a better question.  You'd need to know the Miracle impedance curve, find the low and high point on it, and do the math.  The Miracle claims 16ohm impedance, if that is the low point, not likely, then there will be at most a 1dB variance in the "normal" response curve.

Using an example we have data for, the 846, a 2ohm output impedance causes a 2.5dB variance.  For the 846 the high point is 16ohm, low 4ohm.  Long story short no output impedance is ideal, low output impedance does change things, high output impedance changes things in a meaningful way. And then just to complicate things... sometimes the changes brought by high output impedance are beneficial.  Looking at you Westone :P

For those who likes the convenience of wifi streaming plus access to Groovers and Qobus High res store straight to the DAP?

Unless both companies have abandoned their typical design there is also the AK being a fully discrete balanced circuit while the Calyx is a single ended opamp design with half the output power.  The M does however have the XMOS processor that the 100/120 lack.  Should be interesting to see how the 100II and M compare sound wise.

Found some brief AK100II/120II/Calyx M impressions from Munich  (in Chinese)

Sadly he didn't talk much of the AK100II... But he did say the AK120II sounded better than the AK240..

That's very interesting. Does he got into more detail as to why it sounds better, or what sounds better?

Quick and rough translation of the A&K part.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
- AK100II sounded too thin.
- AK240 did not give him the vibe.
- AK120II surprised the author with detailed sound, solid body and nice treble. Drives IE800 np. Slightly better than the AK240.
- AK's rep said the potential of AK240 can only be released by playing DSD.
- The single-ended output of AK120II will be better than its AK240 counterpart.
- AK100II will be superior to AK120 in terms of market separation.
- The II's are not revisions of AK100/120, but higher-end products. AK will soon start to reduce the production of AK100/120.
- AK-FitEar and AK-Beyer collaboration in the near future. The AK-Beyer collab will be a balanced T5P with 2.5mm TRRS while the product for AK-FitEar collab is still undetermined.

What do they mean by market separation?  As in superior in terms of reaching out to a wider consumer market?

Nah it's just that AK100II is higher-end than AK120.

...And more expensive also?:basshead:
EDIT: The article does not mention the price on the two products.
The author does mention, tho, that the AK120II is twice as expensive as what he thinks it should be.

As a comparison he describes the Calxy M as slightly inferior to AK120II and the M should be fairly competitive around $800.

Really? But it's supposed to be priced at $999, cheaper than the $1,200 price tag for AK120 :D

He said that the sound signature of AK100II felt thin and the AK240 lacks emotion to him. The AK120II sounds more detailed and extended to his ears. It seems to be his preference for a warmer/thicker sound signature instead of the AK120II being better than the other 2 DAPs. Exactly like how the old AK120 is warmer than AK100 and AK240 in terms of sound signature.

He also mentioned that the Calyx M sounds pleasant and is slightly similar in signature to AK120II which leads me to believe he prefers a warm/thick sound. However, he mentioned that the M is not polished as AK120II and its UI and software is not as mature too. He also said that D&A told him that they are negotiating with Microsoft over the rights of using SD card standards and the issue of tagging, so the problem will only be resolved in 1-2 years' time. Not exactly sure what kind of issues they are having with SD cards and tagging. What does Microsoft have to do with this? 64-bit Windows driver issue like the DAC for DX90?

Nope.  The M driver is already out and available for download has been since April.  Which is understandable since they use an XMOS and not home brew.

Only thing connected with MS and SDcards are the exfat format standard.  I believe all companies have to pay a royalty for using it.
