Need advice for home audio in apartment complex

Hello there,

I am in a bit of a predicament and would appreciate advice. Although this doesn't involve headphones, I assume many of you have home audio systems as well. I'm using simple studio monitors (M Audio BX5 D2 no sub).

I live in a one bedroom apartment, and the only "neighbor" I have is below me; none on any of the sides. What I don't know is how loud I can play my music, without them (1) hearing music or (2) being annoyed by the music.

I haven never had a complaint about the music being too loud. However I am not sure what's a reasonable limit. I want to ask my neighbor downstairs, but I am afraid he'll say "it's already too loud!". Should I just play it loud until I get a complaint? The only problem with this is my neighbor is also the manager of the apartments!

Any advice?

Make friends and just ask nicely.

And ask what time your neighbor usually tries to settle down for the night, so you can be sure not to be too loud after then.

You can run a simple test even without an actual dB meter. Ask the manager to ring your phone when it's too loud from his apartment, then turn it back down; have him open the neighboring apartments and do the same tests, less tolerance this time because chances are the downstairs apartment gets more bass than treble and midrange (and do NOT use this as a reference for how loud you can turn up an active subwoofer). Now just make sure you have your digital audio at the same gain so you won't need to compensate too much when going from pre- to Loudness War recordings.
