Audio-Technica Ath-m50 + fiio E07k Andes as an amp

do these seriously need an amp?

not really.

how would fiio E07k Andes affect the sound?

well,

I have an Audio-Technica ath-m50 and I wasn't satisfied with the sound stage at first.

then I bought E07k Andes and still felt the instruments were 10 cm away from my ears...

as you might know, E07k has three gain setting - 0 , 6 dB, 12 dB - so you should increase the gain ( please note that it's an entirely different thing than volume) when you connect a high impedance ,say, a pair of headphones. for a 38 Ohms impedance pair  you should normally set the gain on 6 dB .

but

when I switched the gain to 0 db , I was blown away by the sound stage compared to to 6 dB setting.

there is a catch though ,... the sound becomes "thinner" and I have to go back to 6 db (when listening to classical music for instance)

that all said, I'm a kind of guy who prefers sound stage over a little bit of SQ loss. so...

thought I should share my experience! ;)

by the way , I have tested this configuration with many sources so this isn't about what source you use including E07k's own DAC !

That's a very interesting observation. I will have to try that...
