Sound Card Optical Out to External Amp?

I'm currently using a Sound Blaster Z and a the AKG Q701s, and I'm looking to (potentially) buy an external amp. I was wondering if I could use the TOSLINK optical out on the SBZ with an optical to RCA converter and plug it into an external amp while retaining the surround sound and audio quality. I understand that the sound card converts digita 5.1 surround to stereo with it's onboard DAC, and I'm assuming that I can just bypass the onboard amp and use an external amp instead. Would I have to be concerned about any loss in audio quality somewhere along the way - specifically with an optical->RCA converter?

Certainly! What you are describing is an external DAC, and they come in different levels of sound quality (just like sound cards). The Schiit Modi is available with optical input and is a really good DAC.
