Helping choosing between these two headphones + other recommendations?

Hey. I'm looking for a pair of great sounding headphones (for around $200 or less), and I've done a little bit of research and have two in mind. They are: Audio-Technica ASW9 and Grado sr80i. I'm not sure which to choose, because I've wanted the Audio-Technica for a few years now, simply because they're friggin' pretty and have good reviews, but people have been praising the Grado ones and they're a LOT cheaper than the Audio-Technica. Are either of these phones worth it, or would you recommend other pairs? I like clarity and I'm not interested so much in bass, but I'd generally like something well-rounded. I'd like them for listening to artists like Patrick Wolf and Lana Del Rey, but mostly they're for watching movies and shows. I also prefer over-the-ear or very comfortable on-ear (I'm a small person, so they'll do sometimes).

Hi,

If you need isolation you should consider SoundMagic HP100.

If you don't need any isolation, then Sennheisers HD558/598 are a solid pick.

Best Luck!

Around $200 you have a lot of choices. What kind of music do you listen to and where do you usually enjoy them? Are you into the appearances of your headphones and the portability?

Would you like to check V-Moda XS out? I think they are really sexy. Also AKG K545 should be within the considerations.

I'm not sure what genre these would be considered, but I listen to a people like Patrick Wolf (a lot of violin/instrumental) and Lana Del Rey. I almost always listen at home, and I don't care so much about noise isolation or anything like that. I guess it's hard to say what I want, I just know I want something that sounds pretty good all-round, with less emphasis on bass. I do care about the appearance, but it's not my main concern. Comfort is, though. I have sensitive ears, and I would prefer something over the ear and something that isn't heavy, since I get headaches a lot from heavy headphones.

You should read about:
Sennheiser HD598
AudioTechnica AD900x
Sony Mdr Ma900

This are all very good headphones with smooth highs and nice soundstage.

do u mean the Esw9,,,, with an E ?

I did enjoy this portable headfone, it is an ON-EAR, not AROUND the ear. v comfy, clamp is not tat hard.

Smooth euphonic sound...lambskin...woods...no bloaty bass or sibilance in the highs..nice !

It needs a portable amp/ home amp to wake up a little, otherwise it sounded abit subdued..

which is y some folks dun like it n sell it. my guess. :P

If u like vocals,,,jazz...this should do.. not fantastically capable with big orchestra piece..but might be enuf for some folks?

( there are alot of FAKE ESW9 from the east...be careful...buy from trusted sources or headfiers here ok? )

-------

Grado 80....this is also an on ear...sponge...on the ear...can be irritating to some ears..

i tot it would grate on my ears n i stayed away from grado for a few year...but when i finally gotten my first grado

i love it.  It is very light on the head..doesnt clamp hard...it is an OPEN can...sound will leak..plenty.

It has a MORE RACY GRATING sound than the ESW9..

good for rock...metal..kind of music. get the drift?

go for the 225i if u want a slightly smoother sound.. supposedly the best bang for your $ in the grado range.

-----

if u are undecided, just buy either one from the buysell forum...change or wash n sun the pads n decide if u wanna keep it for eternity..

otherwise...SELL n buy the next one..u wont lose that much money that way :P

Cant go wrong with either one.

of cos there are thousands of good options in the mkt.
