Help me understand AKG Q701 vs. AKG K702, and some general advice would be appreciated as well.

Greetings everyone and anyone. I'm quite new here though I've been lurking for awhile now.

I recently had to return my AKG Q701's as I broke them on a drunken night but I'm strongly considering "upgrading" to some K702's. I've read a good deal about them and other similar priced headphones around here.. I use my headphones primarily for enjoying metal and electronic musics and some hardcore every now and then with a Fiio E17 which I believe isn't really the best setup for these headphones.. I also aim to use them to aid me in music production though I'm terrible at it..

All that being said though I really enjoyed the Q701's besides the bumps on the headband. I've compared the frequency response charts between the two and I'm slightly worried that they won't sound as clear or bright in the mid/bass frequencies. From what I gather much of this has to do with the ear pads?

Any feedback or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

I've tried the Q701s but not the K702s..

Are you referring to the power output of the E17? You might find the E12 is much beefier, although it does not have DAC functionality.

You need to think of your uses in two ways. Either you're enjoying music as a consumer, or you're planning to mix and do music production.

For the latter, you need a good neutral headphone such as the K240 DF, to stick with AKG. these are 10 years out of production but you can still find them used. I imagine you can still enjoy a lot of what you listen to, these headphones respond to EQ quite well.

The opposite scenario headphones, with a nice bright presentation might have your mixes sounding relatively dull as they 'pump' it up.

K701=K702 (the latter has a detachable cable)

I had the K701, and the Q701.

It's essentially the same headphone, but the Q ver. has much more bass, and forward mids.

Really the Q701 seemed to have so little bass as it was... that's horrible news.

LOL

The K701/2 is one of THE bass-shy headphones on the globe ;)

"Bass-Shy" is not something I'll call the 7XX , sure they don't have the punch but with the right equipment  they can give you some nice extended bass which I find to be sufficient for the genres they excel at , just saying

Always nice to hear ;)

even though,

The K7xx has much less bass than Q701

and the Q701 hasn't enough bass to satisfy bass-lovers

what genres do you listen to ?

Pretty much everything except Electronica , Chamber sounds excellent ...although I don't have the best amp to power my 702 , I have heard them on some nice systems and they sound wonderful

That's what i thought... I also listen to some classical, and i prefer the more neutral 'phones..)

The reason that the Q701 did not have much bass is due to your E17 which is a poor match for the Q701. Once properly driven by a decent amp, the Q701 is not lacking in bass after applying the bass port mod (though still doesn't extend well to the deepest sub-bass compared to closed headphones). If you are not considering upgrading your amp I would not bother with the Q701/K702.
