I'd love to drive my IEMs (multi-BA, single dynamic, and hybrid) straight from X5, but I'm disappointed in the sound quality. It's still better than an iPod or similar, but the line-out to E12DIY is world class!

That does it

I'm ordering the HS6 & E12 first thing in the morning. @Joe Bloggs is the DIY version still available somewhere?

For CH23's benefit...

Agreed 100% - a post from me from the other thread...

Must be said that that doesn't mean that the X5 headphone out is junk, not at all - infact, if your 'phones are very mid-centric, then you might actually be better off with the headphone out, however - if you crave lush[er], warm[er], comforting vocals / midrange from your X5, then the E12 definitely adds that for you...

That difference gets noticeably wider when going up the volume, the X5 itself not having as much control as the amp, which - to be fair is understandable (and on the most part, I wouldn't recommend being up as loud as I do on occasion - just recently, was listening to a jazz recording at maximum volume on the E12, the IE800s really open up the harder you push them!)

These though, should be said are still preliminary opinions, considering I've only had the player for four days...

@CH23: Definitely get the E12 DIY if you can. I've got E12 v1 and DIY, and prefer the DIY.

There's one on eBay, but it's €260. I doubt that that's the RP...

Found an online shop that supposedly still has stock: http://www.playstereo.com/product_info.php?products_id=2422

I blame you for the flatness of my wallet ;P

Hmm...

If I hadn't spent the majority of my spare cash on the X5, would've picked up an E12 DIY - Silver looks great, and of course sounds better wink.gif

I guess I didn't realize how lucky I was when I ordered the X5 and E12-DIY at heaphone bar. The guy said it was the last one they had but at that moment I didn't realize how hard it was to find. I was lucky enough to get mine at CAD 225 (incl. tax+shipping).

I don't consider myself a reference but as far as I'm concerned I don't recall hearing anything as sweet as what comes out of that combo. I just need to be a bit more patient for the HS6 that I ordered on aliexpress.

You might be onto one of the lost laws of Head-fi physics there... the happiness of one's ears are directly, but inversely proportionate to the thickness of one's wallet!

X5 > NAD VISO HP50 or Shure SE535's. Sounds great.
