New member, new phones required! EDM & Closed back

Hi all,  I'm a long time lurker,  been reading for years and am involved in another audio forum,  but automotive predominantly..  When I finally decided I needed new cans I thought I must join up,  say hi and get advice from those in the know...

I have a Benchmark DAC1 DAC which can be used for this new headphone setup. I have used this with HD650's and really liked them,  but now need closed back as I have a young family and don't want to disturb them.. I have a pair of HD25-1 ii and love the bottom end of these,  but want something a bit better and closed back!

Music tastes - Mainly electronic Dance Music,  some pop,  some soul.  it's really varied,  but I love a bit of dance too.

So requirements -

To work with benchmark DAC1.

I love a good soundstage in home audio,  so this is important to me.

Great bass.

Budget - I was thinking upto £500,  but can be less, can be more!

Thanks in advance!

I've always been tempted by the DENON ADH2000,  are these still a good second hand buy with my requirements in mind and a good match for the DAC1?

Ok since posting and after a lot of reading, my thoughts have gone like this...

First it was find a set of Denon AD-H 2000, then I moved onto the idea of the NAD 50s, so then I moved onto the PSB m4u 2s - how am I getting on??

Welcome to Head-Fi. Sorry about your wallet biggrin.gif

I'm not familiar with those cans you are considering. Good luck in your search. The one can I would recommend in your budget range is open: the HE-400. Amazing headphones for EDM and anything that you'd like to bring out the bass.

Check Innerfidelity's Wall of Fame lists if you have not already. There are both lists for on ear and over ear sealed.

+1 for HE-400, no competition at that price point. biggrin.gif

Yep. For well-mixed/recorded EDM, the detail is amazing. Then the bass SQ is top notch. I have very high end subwoofer setup in my living room, and the HE-400s have bass sound quality of the same level. So fine biggrin.gif

Thanks for the recommendation, but how loud are the he400s for the non listener?? I do a lot of listening whilst my wife is watching her rubbish on tv so really need something that's not going to disturb her, but get me grooving along!!! I don't think open back will do it I'm afraid.

For the non listener? Good gauge would be how loud are closed back headphones when you take them off and let them play into the air. The bigger downside is that you would hear the TV very well. Probably best to stay with closed back smily_headphones1.gif

Yes I thought so. A shame as I love the sound of the ones you recommended...

I had been looking at the wall of fame.. Denon 2000's have always interested me, so nearly bought a pair of those, then reading the wall of fame was reading that the NAD 50's beat them (and are new, so get a warranty) and then further reading about the phones and their designer led me to the PSB m4u 2s. Now these really look cool and the sound engineering decisions sound fascinating! I also like the fact they have selectable noise cancelling (I fly to Australia from the uk twice a year) so seem to pretty much fit the bill. I was hoping someone with a Benchmark DAC1 had managed to get a listen at some stage...

V-Moda M-100's? They're my go-to headphones for EDM.

Thanks,  are they sealed?  (...Goes off to look!)

Yes, very much so. I would advise caution and try them on first as some people (myself included) have comfort issues with the standard pads. Helpfully it's possible to buy XL pads and with those they fit very well.
