Looking for a Tube Amp/DAC Combo to go With AKG K712s.

I am planning on purchasing the AKG K712s and a DAC/Amp to go with them. However, I am unsure of what DAC/Amp combo I should go with. I would prefer to have a tube amp, and keep the price price under $300. I have looked into the Schiit Vali Modi combo, but the Vali seems to have mixed reviews. Could anyone tell me what some of my better options would be? Thanks in advance.

At $300?  Thats tough.  Vali is good value for the money, and it gets the job done as an intro to tubes/hybrids.  Modi works well too.

Valhalla at $350 might be worth considering.  The Bottlehead Crack if you can DIY is pretty universally liked.  However neither of these come with DACs.  Don't have much experience with much else in that price range.

There are plenty of SS options out there though if you aren't dead set on tubes.

Honestly, you might consider saving up to get something you truly want rather than compromising.  Pay once and get something you'll enjoy.  Going to a meet and auditioning if possible definitely helps in the decision making.

Well, I was also considering the Magni, but I thought a tube amp might be a little better. Would the difference between a tube amp and ss amp be so different that I would notice? I don't really see myself as an all out audiophile. I just like my music to have good sound to it.

Maybe. But it's a personal preference thing. Neither is necessarily better overall. I prefer solid state over hybrid solid state/tube amps in your budget range. Others like the other way around smily_headphones1.gif

One thing about tube amps is that you should consider getting one that lets you change out the tubes (AKA "tube rolling"). That allows you tweak the sound a little.
