The Hardest hitting Headphones are.. ( "The EXTREME BASS Club")
Feb 19, 2017 at 11:47 AM Post #9,061 of 12,957
So, to sum up my original question...

Any headphones that hit like a subwoofer but have great mids/highs/vocsls/clarity/separation/soundstage?

LCD 3 would be there if it could really rumble your ears.

Well, I have the TH900 with me right now. It has pretty good sound quality and is ranked #2 in the first post for bass impact when you boost the bass to extreme levels. Without EQ, the bass impact is actually kind of soft sometimes despite being above neutral by at least a few decibels. I believe this is due to its biocellulose drivers imposing a softness/smoothness on the sound. It has a surprisingly good soundstage and instrument separation for a closed-back. At any rate, I would recommend equalizing any of these headphones to get the tonal balance you're looking for.

Is it hard to keep those Th900 on your head, because those cups look so beautiful? Bass bliss, and wood art.

Did you notice any differences after pushing them a bit? Or any sort of burn in?

Where do you find problem spots on them that you're eq'ing for tonal balance, for general music listening. thx

I watched the Goku and Frieza battle . I didn't realize it was 4 hours! Took like 2 hours to go super Saiyan. I had to ffw a bit :p

I've seen nearly everything in the Dragon Ball universe: many hundreds of episodes. (Click here and scroll down.)

aha! I do sometimes take it off to gaze upon its glory. I like how (relatively) light and easy to use it is.

By pushing, do you mean volume? Because obviously it's going to be louder when you push the volume, and the bass is going to be louder too. So you can get more bass impact simply by increasing the volume...but it can get too loud too easily. It's better to just equalize it, which is pretty much expected around here.

I got the TH900 in a trade, but it is only a trial trade. I am sending it back after a month. I don't believe in burn-in, though.

Hmm. I haven't equalized it yet. But I did play a frequency sweep to get a better feel for things. The most prominent peaks and dips are in the upper mids and treble. What's interesting is that they don't show up in some measurements (click here and here), so perhaps it's production variation or something else. This is the type of thing you really need to do by ear.

It's decent enough that I can enjoy it with most music even without EQ. But those peaks can sound pretty nasty with some recordings, so I'll get around to equalizing it sooner or later.

No issues keeping the Th900s on my head, very comfy.

He meant that they're so beautiful you have to take them off and look at them instead of listening.

I was referring to more of the wild'n EQ and then turning up volume, and running some low end frequency tests and playing bass mekaniks ans stuff :p But you answered by saying its a loan / trial trade.

Would love that opportunity! haha

I'm very interested in the biocell properties of headphones, and well there are so many new ones coming out. As with the thx00,e-mu, 610, and Klipsch if they are using the biodyna , then i assume its like the r10 technology bacteria based biocellulose?? I asked ZMF about the bio material but didn;t get answer. I thought in Japan its patented process to have bacteria based biocell in headphone drivers so that biocellulose i wonder is same as fostex/r10? ANy ideas?

Have you heard headphones with biocellulose drivers before? The TH900 and NightHawk both have a soft/smooth texture I've never encountered with any other driver material, so I suspect all biocellulose drivers may be like that.

Given the TH900's reputation as a basshead headphone, I was expecting something visceral, but it's quite the opposite in stock form: basically a V-shaped audiophile headphone with a pretty, delicate type of sound.

NO :frowning2: :frowning2: :frowning2:
The term biocell seems to be used, but my question is whether the composition is anything like the sony or the fostex because of the patent held in Japan by that company that uses it for other purposes. I have my doubts about Audioquest/ZMF getting the same types of bacteria based biocellulose unless they source it from some Japanese place. If i'm wrong please inform me. Also what is that Beyer material. Its a mystery. I thought i read somewhere its some plant based biodyna type. It looks weird as hell and i cant find info on it anywhere which surprises me! Its not titanium, beryllium, PET, what is i t???????? LOL

"Biocellulose headphone drivers were "invented" because Sony was trying to fool around with new materials for the driver of their new halo flagship headphones at the time, the MDR R10. Some of the guys in the Sony team heard about food scientists at Ajinomoto Corporation (a Japanese company that cornered the artificial MSG market at the time) using a bacteria called Acetobacter to produce "paper in a vat" that they could use as food packaging. They collaborated to build the first biocellulose headphone drivers. In fact the patent holders for biocellulose are Ajinomoto, Sony and Japan's Agency for Industrial Science and Technology.
But Sony stopped using biocellulose in its drivers after a while, and the technology was taken up by Fostex, who became known for the "biodyna" biocellulose drivers for some of their best-loved models like the TH900"

Lol. That makes more sense... Just wear a pair of bassy iems while gazing at the beauty of the Th900s. Problem solved.

I have a big crush on those xb90ex. If i had a th900 and xb90ex thats exactly what i'd do when i need to enjoy those red cups glow by the fireplace, with a haunting painting hung above it, sipping on a nice whiskey, smokin a charcoal filtered ciggy

Hi,

I've got the videos already, but don't have permission to post pics or videos. I've got some errands to run but I'll upload them on youtube and then post the links here.

I basically did the paper-test with the SZ2000 and then the Z1R, it took 4 trials for each headphone to come up with something worth watching. I'll post all 8 videos though this evening.

The Z1R was particularly tricky because the back of the headphone is curvy and the cups don't fold like the SZ's, so I basically had to hold them with my right hand while taking a video with my left hand! haha, it was fun though.

Alright...I need some help with recommended parametric EQ settings for the TH900. It doesn't respond to EQ like the SZ2000 does. I'm using the Chord Mojo to drive it and doing the EQ with VST parametric equalizers in foobar2000. (So I don't want EQ settings involving bass boost features of other equipment I don't have.)

Yea different cup shapes present different problems. Mo cups mo paper problems.

But I look forward to this, and many have for months. This is going to be great!

you will get honored like a true Bass Samurai
