My Cowon iaudio 10 arrived yesterday and my Fiio E12 the day before that, so I've got exact gear as you now for more accurate comparison videos - I'll be starting making these as soon as I figure out how the Cowon works and stop generally messing about smily_headphones1.gif

Can you remind me of what settings you have your Cowon and E12 at during test videos and we're using the beats bass track now?

Yay!!!

Color Therapy!!:beerchug:

edited so mods don't delete:D

I almost sent mine back cuz the manual was 11 pt font.....actually 25% of 11pt font. (no joke)

I flew by the seat of my pants and listened for hours and hours and hours and hours. Used musicbee to make album art work once I had the sound right.

You will be able to move more paper now no doubt. The pads (XX for the sz)

I use a volume of 34 or 33 on the Cowon and just leave it and use the e12 gain as my volume. I never touch the Cowon volume rocker unless to demo the setting I'm on.

Red line is the 77 test gain range before mod

Blue is the sz2000 area

Green is the 77 after mod.

After moons and moons of testing I bypass the eq completely. I had fun with the wide/narrow stuff but for sheer impact the Mach3Bass was where it was at the whole time.

Custom EQ

5 Band FLAT no touching the sliders.

BBE +8

Mach3Bass +9

Bro, have you considered this : JVC SZ1000 + Fiio E17?

This combo will blow your head clean off your shoulders.

I'd recommend if you went for the above, first track to play - Wiz Khalifa - On my level with bass on E17 set to maximum bass setting 10, crank the volume up and wait for it.

When you regain consciousness you can do it all over again wink.gif

Just a thought.....smily_headphones1.gif

I think that's where I'm headed next.  Get an amp, get the SZ1000's, and maybe keep the 55x's for the pads.  The E17 can drive the 1000's to good bass levels, huh?  Good to know, and with the EQ of the E17, I have more flexibility than my iPod would give me.  Hmmmm.:o2smile:

Absolutely - I've been using that set up for a while now and the E17 easily drives my AUDEZE LCD-X cans, so driving the 1 and 2k JVC's is no issue, but main function of the E17 is it's bass control - listening to the bass test tracks on this thread with either model of the JVC's with E17 on max bass is a jaw shuddering experience and the cans literally vibrate on your head! cool.gif

Just using iPods EQ bass boost settings alone really is just a waste of time - the Fiio E17 delivers the kind of serious bass to do the JVC's justice IMO smily_headphones1.gif

No SD.

I was searching another forum and here and a lot of folks loved the J3. Really swore by it and my dilemma with ipod/i everything  was being shared by other folks with low end affinity. They seemed to love the BBE/Mach3Bass  package and after spending way too long trying to do it myself I ended up using their ...BBE and Mach3Bass anyway....and only. I'm not manipulating the response besides bass at all outside of the BBE process.

I'm happy cb got it so we can have exact compares. I would never rec the UI.

If we ever went to war with Russia (for example) I would suggest we clone then anonymous gift them to the military. Wait 2 days and attack. They will be 1/2 way through the horror....too impressed by the sound to stop and smash it but not done yet......they'd be primed for attack. Does that make sense? It's a horribly wonderful little piece of weirdness.

It's a J3 with a ****ed up UI.

I ******* love the thing though.

The #1 ranked DAP on here is the fiio. I tried it and decided to wait.

This DAP is the #2 ranked one with..... a stupid Color Therapy thing in a new case but the internals are the same as is the processing package of the J3

Wait until it grows arms and can give me a massage and scratch my back.

Currently it doesn't do enough to warrant me switching (spending more money)

So, I've discovered that I can't hear the difference between ALAC and 320kbps MP3's. This opens up the option of me using my phone and the E18 Amp/DAC from Fiio. Now to locate a USB OTG cable.
*edit* I just can't get rid of my iPod. I'm addicted to the storage capacity, and would hate having something strapped to my phone for music listening. So, E17 Amp/DAC and my iPod, going to some SZ1000's is my goal. It'll take a little time to save up, but it sounds like it'll be worth it in the end. - end quote of admitted BASSHEAD! smily_headphones1.gif

@willyvlyminck you asked for progressive rock samples with "close to the edge bass guitar," though I'm more into progressive metal, so I sampled the best songs of Liquid Tension Experiment. Not Victor Wooten level virtuosity, but great sounding bass nonetheless. Although in the following samples you can hear why Mike Portnoy is often considered the world's best drummer.

PROGRESSIVE METAL extreme bass boost version

  • these are preamped to -24dB, so once you crank up the volume +24dB you'll hear the mid to high ranges at reference normal volume with the bass boosted, so if your reference normal volume is 100dB, the bass gets boosted to 124dB and if you don't own the JVC HA-SZ2000 you are going to cry so hard
  • also recommended setting the Fiio E12 bass boost on

Liquid Tension Experiment (Universal Mind and Paradigm Shift medley):

And their best song, Acid Rain:

The "elitist" prog metal favorites are Spastic Ink and Blotted Science. In fact you can hear a tribute to Spastic Ink - Mad Data Race in Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift. As for SI and BS, personally, as much as I am impressed by the complex time signatures (structured based on Schoenberg's compositional theory), the antimelody is not for me. I love melodic dissonance and cacophony, but only when the basis of this dissonance is part of the composition--meaning, they must create first what they destroy, and one great example of that is Chopin - Tristesse. This is kinda like reading James Joyce's Ulysses--it's the kind of book you'd love to write, but not to read (in music, the kind you want to play/compose, not to listen to). What I love about Liquid Tension Experiment is that they know how to write consonant melodies on top of being gods in their instruments (I'm talking mostly of the Dream Theater guys).
