Get an AMP or DAP first?

Right now I listen to my music through an iPod nano 7th gen. And I was thinking of getting the C5 portable amp so I can power my Mad Dogs. I read that an amp may or may not change SQ depending on your source and type of files you have. I began thinking if I should upgrade to a dedicated DAP or just get the C5 with the set up I have now. I was thinking if I get a DAP I would get the ibasso DX50 but I have heard of problems with it. So what do you think? Give me your thoughts on what I should do. AMP or DAP?

Thanks!

Running a headphone amp off your Nano means you'll be double amping the headphone amp of the Nano. So while you get more amplifier power, you'll be keeping the sound quality of the Nano amp.

Look into the Fiio X3 DAP. Same amplifier hardware and dac as the FiiO E17, only optimized a little for better performance. They also have a newer, better model, the FiiO X5.

Thanks for the response! Ok so I'll probably buy a new DAP. I'm leaning towards the Ibasso DX50 over the Fiio x3. I like the touch screen and I've read the SQ is about even. Anyone have experience with both?

I plan to use it with my Mad Dogs will the DX50 alone be able to power them or will I need an amp? And is the DAC inside be enough and will I need an external DAC?

I would hope it would power them. But there's a Mad Dogs discussion thread around here somewhere and likely one for the DX50 that you could investigate and ask questions in.

You don't want to buy a DAP that needs an external DAC. LOL
