ROCK JAW Testers - Page 19

Just got mine - many thanks Bob.  You have a PM with a few questions.

So they end up with 2 sets of Aceros, I'm pretty jelly. :basshead:

You have to give credit to Rock Jaw for taking all the feedback provided into their design flow. Not many companies would send out another version of the Acero's for review. Well done Rock Jaw for listening and being awesome. :beerchug:

Here's a teaser for what arrived today.

Had about 10 minutes with each - plus some PMs with Bob - so I have some work to do.

First impressions:

Acero

Feels flimsy / awkward - but closer look, and they are built with quality parts.  They just "feel" delicate / flimsy.  Very comfortable to wear.  Could be a really good sound sig if the bass wasn't so wonky.  Looking forward to seeing what they are like properly dampened - I think they have the potential to be very good.  Bob  is going to send me directions for how to dampen to achieve the amended signature.  Then we'll see how they go.

Alfa Genus

These are really good and my early pick (in the short time I've had them) for best of the collection.  Clear, articulate, plus have some real slam with the silver filters.  Looking forward to putting more time in with these.

Kontrol

Was expecting big things - so far a bit puzzled.  They are muffled, there is some bass bleed, and the mids are recessed.  Already spoken to Bob about this and he assures me that both these and the Hydra both change markedly with burn-in.  I've never been a big believer in burn-in, so I'm looking forward to adjusting my viewpoint.  Going to set these up to burn-in for up to 100 hours (recommended by Bob), and then see where they sit.

Hydra

Similar to Kontrol.  Hoping burn-in helps.

Arcana

Not my usual signature.  A bit warmer than what I'd usually like - but at this stage ahead of Kontrol and Hydra - and for me - quite a bit behind the Alpha Genus.

Anyway - thanks again to Bob.  I have an HD700 vs HD600 comparison to put together whilst I burn in some of these units.  Then onto testing in earnest in about 8-10 days.

I'm thinking individual reviews - but also one comparison post.

Going to take a while to get it all right though.  Will be enjoyable to write I think.

I have everything except the Kontrol Model and my initial thoughts mirror yours almost to a T. I am burning in all the IEM's right now, hoping for the best.

My only comment different is the Genus was a bit hot for me with the treble getting to splashy. Again I am hopeful that burnin will help in this regard.

We are looking at a final tweak on the Arcan, Hydra and Kontrol this week.

Burn in does really help, but think there is a little room to ramp things up a notch.

If I find that the case, we will do the same as we offered with the Acero, I will report back.

Hopefully I'll receive mine soon...

Parcel Monkey states:

24th June 2014 @ 11:00 - Consolidation arrived at gateway

Hopefully than means landed in Canada, since the 22nd it has been stuck at "Standard customs procedure/under inspection" :(

Canadian Customs are nasty money grubbers, so fingers crossed there will be a sweet box of goodness waiting for me at home.

EDIT:

Woo Hoo

24th June 2014 @ 14:45 - Out for delivery

Above and beyond good sir, above and beyond!

Cheers!

I let the Arcana and Hydra run overnight and them went from unlistenable to acceptable, so I'm really hoping burn in actually does help.

I was dinged with $18 in customs and brokerage fees when my box arrived. So YES the Canadian customs are a definite money grubbing pain in the @$$.

Sorry to hear that. They obviously wanted to be a arse to you as I don't think anyone else got charged as it was all clearly marked as evaluation samples with NO commercial value.

**************** ALL TESTERS PLEASE READ ************************

OK guys PLEASE use the Hydra, Arcana and Kontrol as paperweights or as a pretty necklace as I am sending you all new sets.

Spent the day making some adjustments.

Have been looking at the drivers over and over and realised that was not the issue. It was the front end porting, or should I say lack of.

So im going to build you all some new sets and get them out this week along with the Acero.

I wont bother packaging the in-ears again and just jiffy bag them to you.

THEN, you can do some proper testing

Thanks for all your patients guys :beerchug:

not a problem Bob, just one of the possible hassles that a person can get hit with. I may actually contest the charges as these should not have any value as you say. I will look at the paperwork when I get back home.
