Best way to spend $500-$700 just starting out

I just got my hands on a JVC QL-A7 and I have a set of Yamaha B310s. Knowing I need a cartridge, power amp, and possibly a preamp what is the best way I can spend $500-$700 other than speakers? I'm really interested in tubes if possible.

I have plans to upgrade the speakers at a later date, so for now I just need advice on the most "sound" purchases to get started. I don't really need or want to invest in the really high end audiophile equipment. I just want a better than average system. The room is about 12 X 14 I'll be listening in.

You probably will get more and better responses in the "dedicated source components" section of the forum.
