Headphones for metal music - ultimate solution

I finally got my new mounting plates to put Ori pads on my EMU Teak running through a Schiit Modi Multibit and Jotunheim. I'm concerned this combination is a little bright. I was just listening to Baroness' "Purple" on the Tidal Master setting.

In contrast, the Jotunheim pairs very, very nicely with the darker ZMF Ori Blackwoods.

This isn't what I wanted to hear, lol. I was hoping that the Teaks would be close enough that I wouldn't need the Oris. I may have to choose between the Teaks or the Jotunheim. I'm inclined to keep the Jot because I would probably have to move up to a Liquid Carbon (~$250 more expensive) to get something that's demonstrably "better." Uggh... this stupid hobby.

Then again, this could just be me getting used to the more energetic treble of the Teaks.

I'll be purchasing a Matrix HPA-3B to replace my Violectric V280. $420 MSRP new, so same price range as the jot. I'm almost certain it'll be warmer than the jot. It'll be funny to have a new amp without a headphone to try it out with.

Someone needs to sell me their Eikon already! :p

Is that the amp that the Audeze Deckard is based from, but without a DAC?

The problem is that the Jot is awesome with the darker ZMF Ori Blackwood. Really good synergy.

@Hansotek, do you think the Liquid Carbon isn't too dark for bassy headphones like the Ori/Atticus? If I sell my Ori, I'll probably go for the Atticus or Eikon next.

My buddy has a smokin' deal on an LC, and I can then sell the Jot.

What do you think?

HPA-3U is the OEM the Deckard is compromised of — the deckard replaces some power amp amps and other stuff iirc. HPA-3B is fully balanced where-as the 3U is SE.

Lol. Sounds like you're in a quandary* of sorts. Kinda brighter amp with warm/neutral headphones or kinda warmer amp with neutral/bright headphones. I think warmer amp with warmer headphones is a lesser evil than a brighter amp with brighter headphones. One might not be perfect synergy, but the other is torture on the ears.

Yes, and I unfortunately like slightly boosted bass and treble, so that makes the amp selection very important.

Maybe I can swap out my DAC.

I own the hpa-3b, it is a great amp. Warm but not to the point that it hurts warm headphones. I use it with all mine including the hd650 & Nighthawks. I do use it fully balanced. I know that the LC amp is highly recommended, I would also check out the hpa-3b. I was going to pick up the Schiit Jot, however I have lost any interest at this point, the Matrix serves me well.
Also Massdrop does have it occasionally for $350 !

Unfortunately the stock pads of the Teaks contribute to their smoother treble response, so changing them out can have some nasty consequences if your sensitive to that area.

The Ori will always have a smoother treble than any of the Foster designs, just the way Zach tunes them.

That stinks, because the Ori pads are much better. Even though pad- and tio-rolling is subjective, and we all have differently-shaped ears, no one in the TH-X00 thread had any reservations about using Ori pads and Alpha Pads, which are said to be much more comfortable, and even sound better.

I could always try the Dekoni Sheepskin pads, and see how they do.

I think measurements showed an increase in treble response (and the thx00 and EMU are already right at the threshold between just right and too much) for the Alpha Pads, not sure about the Ori pads though.

Someone did some measurements of the Dekoni vs stock pads.  Not sure if it was posted on this forum though.

Thanks for the information.

What's a good resource for understanding all the headphone measurements? I understand some, but not how attack, decay and transient response are measured.

The LC is very good with the Ori and absolutely outstanding with the Eikon. I've heard it doesn't synergize very well with the Atticus, and I think that is because the Atticus really seems to like a lower damping factor (which really brings out the mids).

If you go over to the Atticus and Eikon thread, search my username, and read my last 6-8 posts, it should shed some more light on things. I have a working theory that you can make Atticus synergize well with any amp simply by adding a $10 resistor adapter to the chain. I have a few different resistors on the way to help test this out, but I'm very confident it will work.

But for Ori and Eikon, the LC will be killer out of the box.
