Which is better for rock

I think the right choice is down to preference. M50s have more bass.

I heard the m50s don't do well at high volumes and I like to listen my music at high levels most of the time

Remember that your auditory nerves are never replaced

You might want to check out the donscorpio dolphins. According to the reviews it sounds pretty aggressive yet balanced. If you want more info, you'll have to go to the asian headphone thread because i don't own this.

I mainly listen to rock and have the SRH440. I've heard the M50, and it's a great headphone but the mids are recessed. The SRH440 has amazing highs and mids, and have plenty of detail, but doesn't have a heavy amount of bass (I'm no basshead so I find them perfect). The M50 on the other hand, has plenty of bass, but again, has the recessed mids which might take away from the guitars. It comes down to your preference; do you want more bass, or do you want more detail/highs and mids? I myself would highly recommend the SRH440 for rock, but it's your choice.

What is the purpose of a amp for headphones

I answered a similar question from another head-fier recently. You can read my reply here:

In short though, a pair of Shure SRH440s does better than the ATH-M50 for Rock Music, just make sure you also get a pair of SRH840 ear pads, because they can have harsh highs with the stock pads.

That was a nice review definitely getting the 440s with 840 pads

Glad I could help. :) Once you get your pair, update this post and let us know your impressions of them to help future head-fiers.

I haven't listened to the V-Moda M-80s yet, but I have seen them in person. They seem very well built. However, you should be aware that the ear cups on the M-80s are smaller then they appear to be in some of the pictures shown online. They are on-ear as opposed to over-ear and are only about 2.5" high and a little under 2" wide.
