Amp/DAC for HE400 budget~$600

Yesterday I went to Charlotte Head-fi gathering and listened to some gears. And then sorry to my current setup. I just can't find reasons to love them anymore.

So, I am trying to upgrade my amp and possibly DAC for Hifiman He-400. The combined should be under 600. Currently I used pupDAC and JDSLab CMOY amp.

The goal of this upgrade is to make music clearer, especially for treble. Now I find the music veiled. I need to turn the volume up a lot to feel treble, but then the bass is too strong and deafens me. I am not sure if it's caused by DAC or amp or it's just the signature with this can. Anyway, I looked around and found that Lyr seems pretty good. But should I upgrade DAC too? Any ideas on other combos?

I have no space restriction or portable needs.

Thank you for any help!

By the way, yesterday I listened to LCD2 with Woo7 Fireflies and I think that's the final goal I aim at. It's just soooo good. Do you guys think HE400 with this upgrade will remotely match them? Honesty that's one big reason for this upgrade.

I have two pairs of the HE-400s and like them quite a bit.  I'm using a Fiio E17 with them when connected to my computer, and use either a DX-50 or an AK120 with them when I want them to be portable.  I've been very pleased with the results, though I'm sure there are other equally good or better setups.

Regards,

Bob

Thanks Bob for the quick reply. I heard E17 a lot. But the thing is my current setup costs more than E17. And I don't know if this is going be a big upgrade from my current one. Any ideas?

I use an ODAC and Schiit Asgard 2 with my HE-400s. Sounds great smily_headphones1.gif
